Enjoy the beauty & history of our unique building

Oliver & Sarah Bacon

Oliver & Sarah Bacon, longtime South Natick residents, willed part of their estate to Trustees of Bacon Free Library to create this building

Construction of the masonry began in June of 1879 and was completed in 1880

The cast iron fence was built in 1880; the arrow and cross are meant to honor Natick’s Praying Indians

The building was officially dedicated on April 27, 1881

The building retains Oliver & Sarah’s original intent – to house a library and a historical society

Sarah Bacon had run a lending library from their home at 87 Eliot Street

The architectural details are inspired by European designs from the Renaissance

This window and cozy seat provides a beautiful view of the Charles River

Drawer pulls on the circulation desk are original to the building

BFL doorway arch

The founders meant for the building to be an enhancement to Natick and to elevate its culture

The BFL building is listed on the MA and National Registers of Historic Places

The architect was Robert G. Shaw, who practiced only briefly in Boston

The cross-shaped floor plan with a tower is similar to H.H. Richardson’s Trinity Church in Boston
