SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThis month\, we will discuss Driving Mr. Albert: A trip across America with Einstein’s brain by Michael Paterniti.  \n From Penguin Random House: \nAlbert Einstein’s brain floats in a Tupperware bowl in a gray duffel bag in the trunk of a Buick Skylark barreling across America. Driving the car is journalist Michael Paterniti. Sitting next to him is an 84-year-old pathologist named Thomas Harvey\, who performed the autopsy on Einstein in 1955 — then simply removed the brain and took it home. And kept it for over forty years. \nOn a cold February day\, the two men and the brain leave New Jersey and light out on I-70 for sunny California\, where Einstein’s perplexed granddaughter\, Evelyn\, awaits. And riding along as the imaginary fourth passenger is Einstein himself\, an id-driven genius\, the original galactic slacker with his head in the stars. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Burglary at the Louvre - How Can Writers Top This?
DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** \nThe world is fascinated by the recent jewel robbery at the Louvre\, and so are the Curators of Crime\, mystery authors Connie Berry\, Lane Stone\, Nina Wachsman\, and M.A. Monnin. In this program\, the Curators of Crime will examine the public’s fascination with the recent burglary of Napoleonic jewels at the Louvre and discuss how\, as authors\, they have used the same elements in their books. They cover the crime itself\, the police investigation and their procedures for nailing the thieves\, the psychology and motives that prompt such a bold theft\, and how the intrinsic and historical value of the jewels make them targets and add to the public’s fear of their loss. \n  \nRegister here for the Zoom link. \n  \nThis program is held in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art to Go - Pointillism Cherry Tree Painting
DESCRIPTION:Now you can enjoy Pop up Art School’s projects in your home! Sign up to take home a kit and watch the how-to video any time within a 30-day period in the comfort and convenience of your home. Kits are limited\, so please don’t sign up unless you will watch the Pop up Art School’s how-to video. \nLet’s create a stunning tree painting using pointillism! This painting technique originated during the Impressionist era and involves using dots of different colors to create an impression of flowers and grass. Start with a brush to outline the tree and background\, then add colors and details using dots. This will give your painting a beautiful and unique texture. \nRecommended for ages 13+ \n  \nThis program is full. If you would like\, you may join the waiting list by filling out this form: \n\n \n \n Event Waiting List\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: An Evening for People Who Love Animals
DESCRIPTION:The BFL\, in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library\, presents this virtual conversation with authors and animal lovers Melanie Kaplan and E.B. Bartels about their new books.  \nIn Lab Dog: A Beagle and His Human Investigate the Surprising World of Animal Research\, author Melanie Kaplan investigates the breeding and use of beagles for biomedical research\, drug and product testing\, and education. She takes readers on a journey\, peeking behind laboratory doors and visiting with researchers\, activists\, ethicists\, veterinarians\, lawmakers\, and innovators. Along the way\, she finds thoughtful and caring humans on all sides of the debate\, explores promising developments in nonanimal testing\, and discovers puzzle pieces from her own beagle’s past. \nEqual parts journalism and love story\, Lab Dog offers a nuanced view on our relationship with a species that we both love and exploit\, and a reason to hope for a better future for all. Melanie Kaplan is a longtime independent journalist whose travel and science writing has appeared in The Atlantic\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, and National Parks magazine.  \nE.B. Bartels\, author of Good Grief: On Loving Pets\, Here and Hereafter\, has had a lot of pets—dogs\, birds\, fish\, tortoises. As varied a bunch as they are\, they’ve taught her one universal truth: to own a pet is to love a pet\, and to own a pet is also—with rare exception—to lose that pet in time. But while we have codified traditions to mark the passing of our fellow humans\, most cultures don’t have the same for pets. Bartels takes us from Massachusetts to Japan\, from ancient Egypt to the modern era\, in search of the good pet death. We meet veterinarians\, archaeologists\, ministers\, and more\, offering an idiosyncratic\, inspiring array of rituals — from the traditional (scattering ashes\, commissioning a portrait)\, to the grand (funereal processions\, mausoleums)\, to the unexpected (taxidermy\, cloning). The central lesson: there is no best practice when it comes to mourning your pet\, except to care for them in death as you did in life\, and to find the space to participate in their end as fully as you can. \nE.B. Bartels\, is a nonfiction writer\, a teacher\, an editor\, and a former bookseller with an MFA from Columbia. Her essays and interviews have appeared in Salon\, Slate\, WBUR\, Literary Hub\, and Catapult\, among others. \nRegister directly on Zoom HERE.  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Virtual: Armchair Tour of the Faroe Islands with Joanne Pearson
DESCRIPTION:Landscape photographer Joanne Pearson will be our guide through this armchair tour of the Faroe Islands. \nThe rugged and remote Faroe Islands–an archipelago of 18 islands located in the North Atlantic between Iceland\, Norway\, and the Hebrides–have a long and rich history. Settled by Irish monks around 600 AD\, colonized by Vikings in the ninth century\, and Christianized around 1000\, the Faroe Islands are now an autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark. Formed by volcanic activity and reshaped by ice age glaciers\, mountains rise steeply and sharply from the sea. Small villages in the rounded valleys of the coastline appear below you as you round a bend on a narrow road or emerge from one of the numerous tunnels that now connect almost all of the islands and some of the harder to reach villages. Cascading waterfalls\, flocks of sheep\, and dramatic scenery abound. \nAbout the Presenter\nProfessional landscape photographer Joanne Pearson photographs architecture\, landscapes\, lifestyle\, and food for the hospitality industry\, architects\, and builders throughout the northeast. She has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. Prior to her career in photography\, she was a registered landscape architect in the state of Massachusetts where she practiced for 12 years. \nJoanne’s photographs of gardens\, landscapes\, and people have been featured in magazines\, books\, and calendars that have included Yankee\, Vermont Life\, Offshore\, BrownTrout Publishers Inc.\, Lonely Planet\, Farm and Ranch Living\, Country\, and Willow Creek Press. She is the solo photographer for four calendars produced by Mahoney Publishing\, Inc.\, including Flowers and Gardens of New England. \n  \nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.  \n\n \n \n Faroe Islands\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Virtual: Creating a Modern Homestead with Author Victoria Pruett
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nWe’ll be chatting with modern day homesteader\, blogger\, and author Victoria Pruett about her book Creating a Modern Homestead: Traditional Skills for Real\, Everyday Life.  Victoria will walk us through many aspects of homesteading\, such as cooking from scratch\, food preservation\, backyard chickens\, gardening\, natural pest control\, and more.  You’ll gain some understanding of what it takes to get closer to nature and less dependent on large\, commercial corporations. Hopefully\, you’ll find a tidbit or two that you can practice in your daily life.  \nThis program is offered in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. \nRegister directly on Zoom HERE. \n  \nAbout the Book\nAs our modern lives demand more and more from us\, many people long for a slower pace of life. While picking up and moving to the country may not be an option for everyone\, it is possible to embrace simple living and more traditional skills no matter where you live. In Creating a Modern Homestead\, learn the lost art of from-scratch cooking\, practice food security by keeping a deep pantry\, find out how to raise backyard chickens\, experience the joy of growing your own food (even in a small space)\, and preserve your own harvest through a variety of methods. \nFor the last ten years\, Victoria Pruett of A Modern Homestead has guided her readers through the process of discovering that they truly can incorporate traditional skills into their everyday routines while they also juggle work\, children\, and social lives. Though the idea of including traditional skills may conjure images of spending eight hours a day in the kitchen\, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead\, Victoria offers this book to teach you how to deepen your skillset and increase your self reliance. \nAbout the Author\nVictoria Pruett lives on an 8-acre homestead in central Texas with her husband\, son\, parents\, and in-laws.  But her adult life didn’t start out that way.  Although Victoria grew up with grandparents who loved gardening\, canning\, and scratch-cooking\, in 2014 she found herself living in a subdivision house with no yard and dreaming of life on a homestead.  She made city homesteading her passion project — buying food in bulk\, growing herbs & tomatoes on the deck\, canning in her tiny kitchen\, and cooking from scratch.  As her skills & knowledge grew\, Victoria created A Modern Homestead online\, in order to share her journey and help others learn to live a more traditional life. Today\, millions of people visit this site every year for recipes\, gardening tips\, and other lifestyle strategies to turn their homesteading dreams into a reality. \nYou can purchase signed and personalized books by Victoria at her website. \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

DESCRIPTION:  \nAuthor Elyse Graham will discuss her new book\, Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II\, the true untold story of the academics who became OSS spies\, invented modern spycraft\, and helped turn the tide of the war to defeat the Nazis.
