SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis month\, we will discuss Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach.  \n \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nHere’s an introduction to the book\, excerpted from maryroach.net: \nWhat’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago\, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days\, as  New York Times  best-selling author Mary Roach discovers\, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict\, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology. \nOur discussion will be on Zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - August 23\, 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: George Boutwell - The Most Consequential American Political Figure You've Never Heard Of
DESCRIPTION:Listen in as historian Jeffrey S. Boutwell discusses his new biography\, Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy. \nGeorge S. Boutwell is the most consequential American political figure you’ve probably never heard of.  For seven decades\, George Boutwell sought to “redeem America’s promise” through racial equality\, economic equity\, and the humane use of American power abroad.  During his career from 1839 to 1905\, he was Governor of Massachusetts\, served in the U.S. House and Senate\, was Treasury Secretary for Ulysses Grant\, and Commissioner of Internal Revenue for Abraham Lincoln\, he also helped create the Republican Party in the 1850s\, and challenged the efforts of Presidents McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt to annex the Philippines in 1900 following the Spanish-American war.  Boutwell was instrumental in framing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments\, initiating the impeachment of Andrew Johnson\, and investigating white vigilante violence against blacks in Mississippi in the 1870s.   \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Bacon Free Library and the Ashland Public Library.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link.  \n  \nAbout the Author\nJeffrey Boutwell is a writer\, historian\, and science policy specialist living in Columbia\, Maryland\, after a 40-year career in journalism\, government and with international scientific research organizations.  He has written and spoken widely on issues ranging from nuclear weapons arms control to Middle East peace to environmental degradation and conflict.  He’s passionate about Shakespeare\, Alpine skiing\, improving US-Cuba relations\, and road trips in his Mini Cooper.  Jeffrey and George share a common ancestor\, the indentured servant James Boutwell who emigrated in 1632 from England to Salem\, Mass.  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Q&A with Author Erica Ridley
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to chat with fantastic historical romance author\, Erica Ridley.  Since it’s right before her new book\, A Waltz on the Wild Side\, comes out\, we can celebrate early!  In addition to her clever\, heartwarming novels\, like The Perks of Loving a Wallflower\, Erica also writes young adult horror and thrillers. What can’t she do?? \nBring your questions as this is going to be a rapid fire\, AMA (ask me anything) Q&A! \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \nAbout the Author\nErica Ridley is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of witty\, feel-good\, historical romance novels\, including The Duke Heist\, featuring the Wild Wynchesters. Why seduce a duke the normal way\, when you can accidentally kidnap one in an elaborately planned heist? \nIn The 12 Dukes of Christmas series\, enjoy witty\, heartwarming Regency romps nestled in a picturesque snow-covered village. After all\, nothing heats up a winter night quite like finding oneself in the arms of a duke! \nTwo other popular series\, the Dukes of War and Rogues to Riches\, feature roguish peers and dashing war heroes who find love amongst the splendor and madness of Regency England. \nWhen not reading or writing romances\, Erica can be found eating couscous in Morocco\, zip lining through rainforests in Costa Rica\, or getting hopelessly lost in the middle of Budapest. \n  \nNOTE: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants within 48 hours of the program.

(Anderson) Benson\, MFA\, EdD\, will take us on a virtual exploration of the complex history of contagious disease hospitals in Massachusetts from the 19th to the early 20th century.  She will highlight their role in shaping public health policy\, immigration control\, and institutional development.  Drawing from historical records and case studies\, Dr. Benson will examine how these institutions targeted immigrant and marginalized communities under the guise of care and containment\, leaving a lasting impact on the Commonwealth’s institutional landscape. \nDr. Katherine M. (Anderson) Benson\, MFA\, EdD\, is an institutional historian and an award-winning author.  She has been a special educator for more than 20 years in residential treatment facilities\, juvenile corrections\, and therapeutic programs.  Dr. Benson has written about and lectured on the history of institutional treatment in Massachusetts.  She lives in Western Mass with her husband\, a very bitey cat\, and a special needs dog. \nThis program is sponsored by the Public Health Museum\, presented with support from the Tewksbury Public Library and the BFL. \nRegister directly on Zoom HERE.  \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: "Dinner with King Tut" author Sam Kean
DESCRIPTION:This one is for our history buffs out there!  Join author Sam Kean as he discusses his book\, Dinner with King Tut: How Rogue Archaeologists Are Recreating the Sights\, Sounds\, Smells\, and Tastes of Lost Civilizations\, an archaeological romp through the entire history of humankind—and through all five senses—from tropical Polynesian islands to forbidding arctic ice floes\, and everywhere in between. We hope you can join us for this fascinating talk! \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \n  \nAbout the Book\nWhether it’s the mighty pyramids of Egypt or the majestic temples of Mexico\, we have a good idea of what the past looked like.  But what about our other senses: the tang of Roman fish sauce and the springy crust of Egyptian sourdough?  The boom of medieval cannons and the clash of Viking swords?  The frenzied plays of an Aztec ballgame … and the chilling reality that the losers might also lose their lives? \nHistory often neglects the tastes\, textures\, sounds\, and smells that were an intimate part of our ancestors’ lives\, but a new generation of researchers is resurrecting those hidden details\, pioneering an exciting new discipline called experimental archaeology.  These are scientists gone rogue: they make human mummies; they investigate the unsolved murders of ancient bog bodies; they carve primitive spears and go hunting\, then knap their own obsidian blades to skin the game; they build perilous boats and plunge out onto the open sea—all in the name of experiencing history as it was\, with all its dangers\, disappointments\, and unexpected delights. \nBeloved author Sam Kean joins these experimental archaeologists on their adventures across the globe\, from the Andes to the South Seas.  He fires medieval catapults\, tries his hand at ancient surgery and tattooing\, builds Roman-style roads—and\, in novelistic interludes\, spins gripping tales about the lives of our ancestors with vivid imagination and his signature meticulous research. \nLively\, offbeat\, and filled with stunning revelations about our past\, Dinner with King Tut sheds light on days long gone and the intrepid experts resurrecting them today\, with startling\, lifelike detail and more than a few laughs along the way. \nAbout the Author\nSam Kean is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books.  He spent years collecting mercury from broken thermometers as a kid\, and now he’s a writer in Washington\, D.C.  His stories have appeared in The Best American Science and Nature Writing\, The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, Slate\, and Psychology Today\, among other places\, and his work has been featured on NPR’s Radiolab\, Science Friday\, and All Things Considered\, among other shows.  The Bastard Brigade was a Science Friday book of the year\, while Caesar’s Last Breath was the Guardian science book of the year.  The Disappearing Spoon was a runner-up for the Royal Society book of the year.  Both The Violinist’s Thumb and The Dueling Neurosurgeons were nominated for PEN’s literary science writing award. \n  \nNOTE: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants within 48 hours of the program
