SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Wild Turkeys in Massachusetts with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe wild turkey\, synonymous with Thanksgiving and iconic within our region\, has not always held such a stable place in Massachusetts. There was a time when turkeys were overhunted nearly to the point of extinction. Thanks to a reintroduction program begun in the 1970s\, turkeys can now be found throughout the state in urban\, rural\, and suburban areas. \nIn this program\, Patti Steinman\, the education coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Connecticut River Valley Sanctuaries\, will talk turkey about the nature\, history\, and conservation needs of these native birds. \n  \nThis program is offered in collaboration with the Bacon Free Library and the Tewksbury Public Library. \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE FOR THE ZOOM LINK. \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:Tom Doran: Ease Your Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a desire to reconcile structure with chance\, Tom Doran creates unique digital compositions that layer photography and previous artworks. Informed by years of jazz improvisation and the tactile nature of paper collage\, his process embraces spontaneity and a pursuit of balance between order and disorder. Tom values fundamental artistic principles\, yet intentionally introduces ambiguity to ignite curiosity and encourage viewers to venture beyond familiar perspectives. While often abstract\, his pieces resonate with an underlying “soul” and subtly reference the organic forms and energies of nature. Ultimately\, Tom aims to craft works that prompt personal interpretation and reveal unseen possibilities\, echoing the belief that compelling art poses questions and offers new ways of seeing. \nAccording to Tom: “I use color and texture to challenge but also soothe you. While I don’t require beauty to be an element of my work\, I value beauty hence Ease Your Eyes.” \nCome to the BFL to view Tom’s work\, which will be on display from November 5th through January 28th.  You can also enjoy his work at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) in the Spring of 2026.  \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Doran_silverDoran_redDoran_green \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nTom’s art career didn’t actually begin with art. Instead it started with music. First\, rock\, in the soul\, funk\, and r&b area\, then on to jazz. The jazz aesthetic provided the basis for his art: study and be well prepared so that when it’s time to improvise- make the leap! \nTwenty years ago he began improvising with collage and paint. Now his art is in the digital domain but he uses the same techniques\, now called “pixel collages”: Use original images\, find things to work together\, keep it fresh\, improvise. Tom is fascinated by nature\, geometry\, and strong colors so all of that comes out in his pictures\, which he describes as a collision of nature and the modern world; at times ironic\, funny\, eye candy-like\, digital\, abstract\, and hopefully\, fun. \nTom is a proficient jazz bassist and singer who is mostly self taught\, he is mainly a self-taught artist as well.  His influences include Picasso\, Matisse\, Joseph Stella\, Juan Gris\, Georgia O’Keefe\, Lee Krazner\, Arthur Dove\, Gerhard Richter\, Romare Beardon\, Sam Gilliam\, and Mark Bradford. \nTom says: “Please judge me by my work.” \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Human-ish with Author Justin Gregg
DESCRIPTION:Why do we apologize to our cats\, feel guilty throwing away childhood toys\, or find ourselves bonding with our robot vacuum?  Scientist and bestselling author Justin Gregg (If Nietzsche Were a Narwhal) reveals how one of humanity’s oldest psychological quirks secretly influences nearly every decision we make. Drawing on cutting-edge research from his new book Human-ish (Little\, Brown\, 2025)\, Justin explores our universal tendency to see human-like qualities in everything around us—and shows how understanding this bias can transform our relationships with animals\, technology\, and each other.  \nThis program is hosted in collaboration with Groton Public Library. \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE FOR THE ZOOM LINK.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThis month\, we will discuss Susan\, Linda\, Nina\, & Cokie: the Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR by Lisa Napoli.  \n \nFrom the publisher: \nIn the years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964\, women in the workplace still found themselves relegated to secretarial positions or locked out of jobs entirely. This was especially true in the news business\, a backwater of male chauvinism where a woman might be lucky to get a foothold on the “women’s pages.” But when a pioneering nonprofit called National Public Radio came along in the 1970s\, and the door to serious journalism opened a crack\, four remarkable women came along and blew it off the hinges.  Susan\, Linda\, Nina\, and Cokie is journalist Lisa Napoli’s captivating account of these four women\, their deep and enduring friendships\, and the trail they blazed to becoming icons.  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \n  \nOur discussion will be on Zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - October 2026\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: The Allure of Vampires with Bill Thierfelder

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - No Safety for Us: The Internment of Native Americans on Deer Island
DESCRIPTION:UNFORTUNATELY\, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE CURRENT LAPSE IN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPROPRIATIONS TO THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE.\n \nThis year marks the 350th anniversary of King Philip’s War.   This 14-month rebellion\, which was led by the Wampanoag chief Metacom (later known as King Philip)\, was the Native Americans’ last-ditch effort to resist English authority and stop English settlement on their lands (history.com).\n \nSoon after the war began\, colonists set up an internment camp on Deer Island to relocate “Christianized” Indigenous people whom they believed could turn against the English and join the rebellion.  In the winter of 1675-76\, approximately 500 Native Americans were imprisoned on the island\, many of whom perished without adequate food or shelter in the harsh New England temperatures. (National Park Service)\n \nThe Natick Historical Society and the Bacon Free Library will host Shawn Quigley from the National Park Service to discuss this tragedy on Deer Island.  Shawn’s program will explore the historic use of the Boston Harbor Islands\, their role as an internment camp for Native Americans from praying towns\, and stories of survival and reliance from those imprisoned on Deer Island. \n \nThis program will take place at the Natick Historical Society\, located downstairs from the Bacon Free Library. \n \nPlease register in advance for this program\, since seating is limited. If you are unable to attend\, please let us know so we may offer your seat to the next person on our list. \n  \n\n \n \n Deer Island\n \n \n Name*Email*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ\n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Virtual: Who REALLY Wrote Shakespeare? with Author and Historian David Kruh
DESCRIPTION:Who Really penned all the works attributed to Shakespeare?  The doubts have been around for over 300 years.  How could William Shakespeare — a man who never sailed — have written with such accuracy about sailing in The Tempest?  Or how — without studying law — could he have written with such insight about lawyers\, courts\, and legal issues\, in plays such as Henry IV?  Or — without ever serving in the military — written so splendidly of the rigors and technical aspects of war as he did in Hamlet?  That he couldn’t and didn’t is a fascinating concept that has amused many\, tantalized others\, and consumed the lives of a few\, including a Boston man who\, in 1916\, went to court to prove that someone other than Shakespeare wrote all those great works.  Before you laugh… he won the case.  \nHear the story of one man’s search for the “real” author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare and how — in a stunning piece of historical irony — that search played a role in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and we’re collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities. \n  \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \nAbout the Author\nDavid Kruh is a former New Yorker and a 1978 graduate of the University of Maryland.  While earning his Masters in Computer Engineering at Boston University\, David worked as an engineer at WRKO Radio.  He has also worked full time as a copywriter\, computer programmer\, radio producer\, radio engineer\, and\, for a few years in the mid-1990s\, as a spokesman and web master for the Big Dig.  He retired a few years ago from a semiconductor manufacturer\, where he was the direct marketing manager.  He is also the author of several other books\, notably two on Boston’s Scollay Square and Building Route 128.   David’s most recent book is Inseparable\, based on the audacious 1962 escape by three inmates from Alcatraz.  \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.  \n
