SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: The Indigenous Old World -- An Exploration of Pre-Colombian North America
DESCRIPTION:The BFL is partnering with the Tewksbury Public Library for this exploration of Pre-Colombian North America. Christoph Strobel\, Department Chair and Professor of History at UMASS Lowell\, will bring us into the Indigenous Old World.  \nBefore European colonization\, North America was filled with cities\, towns\, and villages. Moreover\, Indigenous Americans actively managed their environment and participated in long distance exchange networks.  \nChristoph Strobel is the author of War and Colonization in the Early American Northeast; Native Americans of New England; and The Global Atlantic: 1400 to 1900. In addition\, he has published many other books and academic papers. \nThis program will be held over Zoom.  Please register HERE for the Zoom link. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday August 26 \nWe will be discussing: Woman in the Dunes by Hiroshi Teshigahara\, Japan 1964 \nDVD available in the Minuteman Network HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Quilts by Frances Caruso Daneault
DESCRIPTION:The BFL  is thrilled to welcome back former Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian extraordinaire Fran Daneault to exhibit her spectacular collection of quilts. Along with raising her two sons in Natick and working at the Bacon\, Fran has also spent years perfecting her crafting skills. She applies the same energy\, creativity\, joy\, and humor to her artistic works that she brought to working with children and families at the Bacon\, where she frequently wore and gifted some of her handmade creations. \nA longtime resident of Natick\, Fran and her husband recently relocated to New Hampshire\, where Fran can be found walking on the beach\, volunteering in her local library\, and quilting up a storm. \nJoin us for an Art Reception on Tuesday\, October 8 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm! \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n My HouseGrownBambooHidden AlphabetFirst Trip \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nFran’s work\, in her own words:\n \nI am a scrappy\, wonky\, modern\, art quilter who sometimes makes traditional quilts. \nI like learning in classes and workshops but have trouble sticking to a pattern. \nFor fabric\, I collect randomly spaced dots\, paisleys\, loudly busy prints and happy colors. I think\, perhaps wrongly\, that they all go together. \nI own way too much fabric but still feel the need to give orphaned fabrics a home. \nI hope you enjoy this collection of quilts. \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Author Heather Wolf Discusses "Find & Identify More Birds: How to Pick a Patch"
DESCRIPTION:The BFL is partnering with the Ashland Library to bring you bestselling author Heather Wolf\, who will discuss how to find and identify more birds by picking a “patch\,” a place close to home where you can watch birds often. She’ll give tips on how to pick a patch and how to use it not only as a “classroom” to become a better birder\, but also as a way to connect more deeply with the nature that surrounds you. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \nAbout Heather’s book\, Find More Birds: 111 Surprising Ways to Spot Birds Wherever You Are: \nA gorgeously photographed trove of 111 ingenious tips for seeing more birds wherever you are—from crowd favorites (hummingbirds\, owls\, eagles) to species you’ve never spotted before. Seeing more birds than you ever imagined and witnessing exciting avian drama is possible—whether you’re on the go or in your own neighborhood\, local park\, or backyard. As Heather Wolf explains\, it all comes down to how you tune in to the show happening around you\, the one in which birds—highly skilled at staying under the radar—are the stars. In Find More Birds\, Heather shares her very best tactics—and the jaw-dropping photographs they helped her capture: \n\n\n\nLook for birds at their favorite “restaurants”— from leaf litter to berry bushes\, and ball fields to small patches of mud\nWatch for “tree bark” that moves . . . you may find it has feathers\nTry simply sitting on the ground for a revealing new perspective\n\n\n\nAs your senses sharpen and “noticing” becomes second nature\, Find More Birds will turn your daily routines into bird-finding adventures\, too. Whether you’re strolling down the block or parking your car\, you never know what will surprise you next! \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Changing Weather in MetroWest: Extreme Heat\, Flooding\, & Wind (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is here and impacting our weather systems. \nJoin us for this virtual program to learn how weather systems are changing in MetroWest\, how extreme heat has impacted MetroWest\, and how we can prepare for extreme weather. \nLast summer\, Natick\, Ashland\, Framingham\, and Holliston took part in a heat study conducted by the McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University. The findings of that study are helping to explain the relationship between nature and heat islands located in MetroWest.  This program is presented by the sustainability staff from Ashland\, Natick\, and Framingham in partnership with Dr. Irene Porro\, the Director of the McAuliffe Center. \n\n\n\n\nThe BFL is partnering with the Ashland Public Library\, the Framingham Public Library\, the Holliston Public Library and the Morse Institute to bring you this program. \nSponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Library in collaboration with the sustainability coordinators in Ashland\, Framingham\, and Natick. \n\n  \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis month\, we will discuss Rough Sleepers: Dr. Jim O’Connell’s urgent mission to bring healing to homeless people by Tracy Kidder. \nFrom the Penguin Random House website: \nIn Rough Sleepers\, Kidder tells the story of Dr. Jim O’Connell\, a gifted man who invented a community of care for a city’s unhoused population\, including those who sleep on the streets—the “rough sleepers.” \nAfter Jim O’Connell graduated from Harvard Medical School and was nearing the end of his residency at Massachusetts General\, the hospital’s chief of medicine made a proposal: Would he defer a prestigious fellowship and spend a year helping to create an organization to bring health care to homeless citizens? That year turned into O’Connell’s life’s calling. Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O’Connell and his colleagues as they work with thousands of homeless patients\, some of whom we meet in this illuminating book. We travel with O’Connell as he navigates the city streets at night\, offering medical care\, socks\, soup\, empathy\, humor\, and friendship to some of the city’s most endangered citizens.  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nOur discussion will be held in a hybrid format.  The host will be in person at the BFL\, while some members will join over zoom.  You are welcome to join either way.  For zoom\, please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - September 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ
