SUMMARY:Quilts by Frances Caruso Daneault
DESCRIPTION:The BFL  is thrilled to welcome back former Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian extraordinaire Fran Daneault to exhibit her spectacular collection of quilts. Along with raising her two sons in Natick and working at the Bacon\, Fran has also spent years perfecting her crafting skills. She applies the same energy\, creativity\, joy\, and humor to her artistic works that she brought to working with children and families at the Bacon\, where she frequently wore and gifted some of her handmade creations. \nA longtime resident of Natick\, Fran and her husband recently relocated to New Hampshire\, where Fran can be found walking on the beach\, volunteering in her local library\, and quilting up a storm. \nJoin us for an Art Reception on Tuesday\, October 8 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm! \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n My HouseGrownBambooHidden AlphabetFirst Trip \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nFran’s work\, in her own words:\n \nI am a scrappy\, wonky\, modern\, art quilter who sometimes makes traditional quilts. \nI like learning in classes and workshops but have trouble sticking to a pattern. \nFor fabric\, I collect randomly spaced dots\, paisleys\, loudly busy prints and happy colors. I think\, perhaps wrongly\, that they all go together. \nI own way too much fabric but still feel the need to give orphaned fabrics a home. \nI hope you enjoy this collection of quilts. \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Author Heather Wolf Discusses "Find & Identify More Birds: How to Pick a Patch"
DESCRIPTION:The BFL is partnering with the Ashland Library to bring you bestselling author Heather Wolf\, who will discuss how to find and identify more birds by picking a “patch\,” a place close to home where you can watch birds often. She’ll give tips on how to pick a patch and how to use it not only as a “classroom” to become a better birder\, but also as a way to connect more deeply with the nature that surrounds you. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \nAbout Heather’s book\, Find More Birds: 111 Surprising Ways to Spot Birds Wherever You Are: \nA gorgeously photographed trove of 111 ingenious tips for seeing more birds wherever you are—from crowd favorites (hummingbirds\, owls\, eagles) to species you’ve never spotted before. Seeing more birds than you ever imagined and witnessing exciting avian drama is possible—whether you’re on the go or in your own neighborhood\, local park\, or backyard. As Heather Wolf explains\, it all comes down to how you tune in to the show happening around you\, the one in which birds—highly skilled at staying under the radar—are the stars. In Find More Birds\, Heather shares her very best tactics—and the jaw-dropping photographs they helped her capture: \n\n\n\nLook for birds at their favorite “restaurants”— from leaf litter to berry bushes\, and ball fields to small patches of mud\nWatch for “tree bark” that moves . . . you may find it has feathers\nTry simply sitting on the ground for a revealing new perspective\n\n\n\nAs your senses sharpen and “noticing” becomes second nature\, Find More Birds will turn your daily routines into bird-finding adventures\, too. Whether you’re strolling down the block or parking your car\, you never know what will surprise you next! \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis month\, we will discuss Rough Sleepers: Dr. Jim O’Connell’s urgent mission to bring healing to homeless people by Tracy Kidder. \nFrom the Penguin Random House website: \nIn Rough Sleepers\, Kidder tells the story of Dr. Jim O’Connell\, a gifted man who invented a community of care for a city’s unhoused population\, including those who sleep on the streets—the “rough sleepers.” \nAfter Jim O’Connell graduated from Harvard Medical School and was nearing the end of his residency at Massachusetts General\, the hospital’s chief of medicine made a proposal: Would he defer a prestigious fellowship and spend a year helping to create an organization to bring health care to homeless citizens? That year turned into O’Connell’s life’s calling. Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O’Connell and his colleagues as they work with thousands of homeless patients\, some of whom we meet in this illuminating book. We travel with O’Connell as he navigates the city streets at night\, offering medical care\, socks\, soup\, empathy\, humor\, and friendship to some of the city’s most endangered citizens.  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nOur discussion will be held in a hybrid format.  The host will be in person at the BFL\, while some members will join over zoom.  You are welcome to join either way.  For zoom\, please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - September 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:NO Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nNO CINEPHILES on Monday September 30 \n  \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Great Boston Fires with Author and Historian David Kruh (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The BFL is partnering with the Ashland Public Library to bring you author and historian\, David Kruh. \nIn this virtual program\, David will guide us through several devastating fires and their impact on Boston\, from the many “great” fires of the 17th\, 18th\, and 19th centuries (including the truly Great Fire of 1872)\, the Cocoanut Grove tragedy of 1942 (which killed 492)\, and the Hotel Vendome fire of 1972 (which resulted in the deaths of eight fire fighters.) \nHow did these fires happen? What was learned from these events? What\, if anything\, was done to try to prevent similar catastrophes? David’s newest slide show\, filled with images from these events\, answers these and other questions. \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Art Reception - Quilts by Frances Caruso Daneault
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Bacon Free Library is thrilled to welcome back former Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian extraordinaire Fran Daneault to exhibit her spectacular collection of quilts. Along with raising her two sons in Natick and working at the Bacon\, Fran has also spent years perfecting her crafting skills. She applies the same energy\, creativity\, joy\, and humor to her artistic works that she brought in working with children and families at the Bacon\, where she frequently wore and gifted some of her handmade creations. \nA longtime resident of Natick\, Fran and her husband recently relocated to New Hampshire\, where Fran can be found walking on the beach\, volunteering in her local library\, and quilting up a storm. \n  \nFrom Fran: \n \n  \nI am a scrappy\, wonky\, modern\, art quilter who sometimes makes traditional quilts. \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: In Conversation with Historical Fiction Author Madeline Martin\, author of "The Booklover's Library"
DESCRIPTION:The Bacon Free Library is partnering with the Ashland Public Library to bring you author Madeline Martin. \nThis one is for book lovers everywhere! We’re so pleased to be chatting with author Madeline Martin about her newest release\, The Booklover’s Library\, as well as several of her other book-related books such as The Keeper of Hidden Books and The Librarian Spy. We hope you can join us for this fun and fascinating conversation. \n\nMadeline Martin is a New York Times\, USA Today\, Publisher’s Weekly\, and internationally bestselling author of historical fiction and historical romance with books that have been translated into more than 25 languages. \nShe lives in sunny Florida with her two daughters (known collectively as the minions)\, two incredibly spoiled cats\, and a man so wonderful he’s been dubbed Mr. Awesome. She is a die-hard history lover who will happily lose herself in research any day. When she’s not writing\, researching or ‘moming’\, you can find her spending time with her family at Disney or sneaking a couple spoonfuls of Nutella while laughing over cat videos. She also loves to travel\, attributing her fascination with history to having spent most of her childhood as an Army brat in Germany. \n\n\nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE FOR THE ZOOM LINK.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis month\, we will discuss On Writing: a memoir of the craft by Stephen King. \n  \nAccording to an Audible review: “On Writing [is] an improbably fascinating\, relentlessly compelling trip through the mind\, style\, life\, and work of one of our greatest popular writers. If you want to write\, this book will quickly become a treasured resource\, because it will improve your writing. But even if you have no interest whatsoever in writing\, King’s anecdotes and instructions into the art and process will probably make you a better\, more informed reader.” \n  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nOur discussion will be held in a hybrid format.  The host will be in person at the BFL\, while some members will join over zoom.  You are welcome to join either way.  For zoom\, please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - October 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
\nFor Monday October 28 \nWe will be discussing: The Vanishing by George Sluizer\, Netherlands\nFrance 1988 \nCriterion DVD available on Minuteman HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Nature Photography by Lia Vito
DESCRIPTION:Lia Vito has brought the autumnal beauty of Acadia National Park to the walls of the BFL.  Come in to enjoy her photography featuring the rich golden hues of the Maine foliage along with up-close and personal peaks into wild birds in action.  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n waterstonestairsowlfamilyheronfamilynestbirdfish3herons \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nLia’s work\, in her own words:\nMy interest in action photography led me to a fascination with birds and other wildlife. Observing their behaviors and interactions has been educational as well as entertaining. \nWith a telephoto lens and lots of patience\, I have been able to capture special moments like the ones I have on exhibit here. These interactions between members of bird families warm my heart. \nI love visiting Acadia National Park. I have observed many beautiful natural scenes there and tried to do justice to them with my images. \n
