SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: World War II & Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:The Bacon Free Library is partnering with the Tewksbury Public Library to bring you author James L. Parr\, who will discuss his new book\, World War II Massachusetts. Over 500\,000 Massachusetts residents answered the call to military duty in the Second World War\, while the rest of the state’s citizens fought the war on the home front. Everyone in the family\, including pets\, found creative and essential ways to contribute. Thousands worked in factories\, volunteered for Civil Defense\, watched for enemy aircraft\, and took part in salvage collections and bond drives\, all while dealing with rationing\, blackouts\, rumors and a host of other wartime inconveniences. And while thousands of service members left to fight overseas\, the Bay State also welcomed thousands more to serve on its military bases that were such an important part of our nation’s defense. Learn some of the stories of these brave and dedicated citizens — from the famous to the ordinary — as they faced wartime challenges. James L. Parr taught elementary school for 34 years before retiring in 2022. A longtime volunteer at several local historical organizations\, Parr is the author of three additional books for The History Press.  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we will discuss Harry Truman’s Excellent adventure: the true story of a great American road trip by Matthew Algeo. \nA synopsis of this book from Chicago Review Press: \nFrom Missouri to New York and back again\, this recounting of an amazing journey chronicles the road trip of a former president and his wife and their amusing\, failed attempts to keep a low profile. Diners\, bellhops\, and cabbies shouted out “Hiya\, Harry!” whenever they recognized the former president\, and\, out for his daily constitutional on the streets of New York\, Harry even stumbled into the sidewalk shot of the newly launched Today show. Along the way there are brief detours into relevant topics\, such as the postwar American auto industry\, McCarthyism\, the development of the nation’s highway system\, and the decline of Main Street America. \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nOur discussion will be held over Zoom (the BFL is closed on Saturdays in the summer).  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - July 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday July 29\nWe will be discussing:  \n\nWaking Life by Richard Linklater\, USA 2001\nDVD available on the Minuteman HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Garden Travel - England: The Cotswolds\, Cornwall and Devon
DESCRIPTION:Landscape photographer Joanne Pearson will be our guide through this armchair tour of 11 gardens in southwestern England. Among the highlights are the much revered Arts and Crafts style garden at Hidcote; the last surviving rococo garden in England at Painswick; the inspiring gardens at Drogo Castle\, the last castle ever built in England; and the remarkable Eden Project.  The Eden Project is the radical and inspirational transformation of an abandoned clay pit to outdoor gardens and multiple biomes housing rainforest\, temperate\, and arid plant species. \nJoanne Pearson has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. Prior to her career in photography\, she was a registered landscape architect in the state of Massachusetts where she practiced for 12 years. Her photographs of gardens and landscapes have been featured in magazines and calendars that have included Yankee\, Northshore Magazine\, Vermont Life\, Offshore\, BrownTrout Publishers Inc. and Willow Creek Press. She is the solo photographer for four calendars produced by Mahoney Publishing including Flowers and Gardens of New England.  In addition to her garden photography\, Joanne photographs architecture\, landscapes\, lifestyle\, and food for the hospitality industry\, architects and builders throughout the northeast. \nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.  \n\n \n \n Gardens in England\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n\n

Across the continent\, Indigenous peoples produced architecture and monumental construction. The ancient and medieval communities of North America were fed by agriculture. Moreover\, Indigenous Americans actively managed their environment and participated in long distance exchange networks.  \nChristoph Strobel is the author of War and Colonization in the Early American Northeast; Native Americans of New England; and The Global Atlantic: 1400 to 1900. In addition\, he has published many other books and academic papers. \nThis program will be held over Zoom.  Please register HERE for the Zoom link. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \n

SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
\nFor Monday August 26 \nWe will be discussing: Woman in the Dunes by Hiroshi Teshigahara\, Japan 1964 \nDVD available in the Minuteman Network HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net
