SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday March 30\, we will be discussing: \nThe passenger by Michelangelo Antonioni\,  Italy 1975. \n(Italian title: Professione: reporter) \nDVD available in the MLN HERE \n\n \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThis month\, we will discuss Dropkick Murphy: a legendary life by Emily Sweeney.  \n \nFrom Hamilcar Publications: \nNewspapers called him the “the man with the cast-iron toes\,” “the best drop-kicker in wrestling\,” and “one of the mat game’s biggest box office attractions.” But Dr. John “Dropkick” Murphy’s legacy extends far beyond the wrestling ring. Decades before the Betty Ford Center became a household name — and long before the band the Dropkick Murphys named themselves in his honor — the phrase going to Dropkick’s meant a person struggling with addiction needed help and would soon get some. \nThis book chronicles for the first time the unbelievable life of Dr. “Dropkick” Murphy\, a professional wrestler who put himself through medical school during the Great Depression and then opened Bellows Farm\, a one-of-a-kind institution that served as both a facility where elite athletes could train as well as a secluded place where down-on-their-luck alcoholics could go to sober up discreetly. \nThe celebrities who frequented Dropkick Murphy’s farm were many\, and numerous professional athletes would go there to focus on their training and work out in his state-of-the-art gymnasium. As a result\, Bellows Farm featured an unrivaled and revolving cast of colorful characters who brought it to life. Drawing on years of research and interviews\, author Emily Sweeney goes behind the scenes to reveal the untold story of Murphy’s life\, his farm\, and the legendary events that unfolded there. \n  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \n  \nOur discussion will be on Zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n  \n\n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - March 2026\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Paintings of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of America’s Semiquincentennial\, Mallory Mortillaro presents Paintings of the American Revolution. \nWe all know the story of the Revolutionary War\, but how much of our understanding is colored by the way the war was depicted by artists? Paintings of the American Revolution have been essential in the way that the war was understood\, both at the time of the conflict and for generations after. This lecture will explore well-known paintings such as Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware\, John Trumbull’s Declaration of Independence\, and Asher Durand’s The Capture of Major André. \nMallory Mortillaro is an art historian and educator. She has ten years of teaching experience and has worked on various art research projects for museums and organizations in the New York metropolitan area. She studied at Drew University. \nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.  \n\n \n \n VIRTUAL: Paintings of the American Revolution w/Art Historian Mallory Mortillaro\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Amalia Kussner's Paintings & The Characters Of The HBO Series "The Gilded Age"
DESCRIPTION:Amalia Kussner was one of the preferred artists of Gilded Age New York\, especially in the 1890s when she painted miniature portraits of the elites. Fans of the critically acclaimed HBO series\, The Gilded Age\, will appreciate Kussner’s portraits of several key characters\, including Mrs. Astor\, the reigning matriarch of the social scene and her two daughters; famed actress Lillian Russell; English soprano Marie Tempest; and wealthy socialite Consuelo Vanderbilt.  Kussner even met Ward McAllister\, the arbiter of Gilded Age society. He advised her not to pursue her career as an artist and\, thankfully\, she ignored him. \nIn this program\, author and historical researcher Kathleen Langone will reveal how Kussner’s portraits and interactions with these famous people can provide more insights into their extravagant lives. \nKathleen Langone is the host of the podcast People Hidden In History and the author of the book Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune. \nThis program is held in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library. \n  \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link. \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThis month\, we will discuss Driving Mr. Albert: A trip across America with Einstein’s brain by Michael Paterniti.  \n From Penguin Random House: \nAlbert Einstein’s brain floats in a Tupperware bowl in a gray duffel bag in the trunk of a Buick Skylark barreling across America. Driving the car is journalist Michael Paterniti. Sitting next to him is an 84-year-old pathologist named Thomas Harvey\, who performed the autopsy on Einstein in 1955 — then simply removed the brain and took it home. And kept it for over forty years. \nOn a cold February day\, the two men and the brain leave New Jersey and light out on I-70 for sunny California\, where Einstein’s perplexed granddaughter\, Evelyn\, awaits. And riding along as the imaginary fourth passenger is Einstein himself\, an id-driven genius\, the original galactic slacker with his head in the stars. Part travelogue\, part memoir\, part history\, part biography\, and part meditation\, Driving Mr. Albert is one of the most unique road trips in modern literature. \n  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \n  \nOur discussion will be on Zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n  \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - February 2026\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ
