SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday August 28 \nWe will be discussing: Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase\, Japan 2015 \nAvailable on Kanopy HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Featured Artist - Barbara Levine
DESCRIPTION:Barbara paints in oils and in gouache. She loves the texture and fluidity of oil paints and the ease with which you can layer the paint. She says that although gouache is a water based paint and can be used in ways similar to watercolors\, it is more opaque and can be layered as well. She notes that these days both have an enormous variety of colors available to use and to mix.  \nBarbara learned to paint primarily “en plein air” in a New England impressionist tradition and she says that it has been a wonderful adventure for her. She comments that being outside trying to capture in paint the light at particular moments as it flows onto or around the forms one is looking at can be extremely exhilarating. \n  \nBarbara has a Masters Degree in Social Work and many\, many years of postgraduate trainings in the field of psychotherapy. She says that she is sometimes tempted to say her work is somewhat disconnected from painting but realizes that it has taught her to be especially observant and aware of subtle visual nuances which has helped in her painting. Her training in painting has been through years of local\, national and international workshops. Her teachers have included: Gloucester artist David Curtis\, Boston artists George Nick\, Charlotte Gibbs\, Robert Cormier\, and Michael Dowling\, Israeli artist Elie Shamir\, and nationally and internationally known artists Kelly Carmody\, Victor Butko\, Scott Christenson\, Ann Blair Brown\, Lori Putnam\, and Kevin Macpherson.

\nFor Monday September 25 \nWe will be discussing: La Ciénaga by Lucrecia Martel\, Argentina 2001 \nDVD Available in the Minuteman Network HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Join Tory Stephens of Grist magazine\, an independent non-profit media organization focused on the climate crisis\, and learn how he created Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. \nImagine is a storytelling initiative that calls for fiction writers to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress\, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance\, adaptation\, reform\, and hope. The initiative also seeks narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by the climate crisis\, and stories that are rooted in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place\, customs\, cuisine\, and more). \nOver the course of three years the project has encouraged 3\,000 plus writers from 91 countries to submit stories\, and of which 700\,000 people have read. Writers and readers alike will enjoy this climate justice romp. \nThis program will be held virtually;  Click here to join the Zoom program

SUMMARY:Mass Audubon's The Nature of Fall with Patti Steinman (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Nature of Fall with Patti Steinman \nAutumn in Massachusetts is filled with seasonal wonders and mysteries unique to our state. Why do leaves change color and fall off their trees? What animals are rustling through those crunchy\, fallen leaves\, and what are they doing? Why don’t we hear birds\, crickets\, and bees anymore? This online program will introduce the seasonal dynamics of the nature of Massachusetts in fall\, including the plants and animals that experience it. You’ll also leave with ideas and suggestions for observing\, appreciating\, and supporting nature near home. \nPatti Steinman is the Senior Teacher/Naturalist at Arcadia and the Connecticut River Valley Wildlife Sanctuaries. Patti has worked at Mass Audubon for over 30 years\, overseeing and teaching environmental education programs for all ages. Patti has an MS from Antioch New England in Environmental Studies. \n  \nThis program will be held over Zoom.
