SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Q&A with Author Erica Ridley
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to chat with fantastic historical romance author\, Erica Ridley.  Since it’s right before her new book\, A Waltz on the Wild Side\, comes out\, we can celebrate early!  In addition to her clever\, heartwarming novels\, like The Perks of Loving a Wallflower\, Erica also writes young adult horror and thrillers. What can’t she do?? \nBring your questions as this is going to be a rapid fire\, AMA (ask me anything) Q&A! \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \nAbout the Author\nErica Ridley is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of witty\, feel-good\, historical romance novels\, including The Duke Heist\, featuring the Wild Wynchesters. Why seduce a duke the normal way\, when you can accidentally kidnap one in an elaborately planned heist? \nIn The 12 Dukes of Christmas series\, enjoy witty\, heartwarming Regency romps nestled in a picturesque snow-covered village. After all\, nothing heats up a winter night quite like finding oneself in the arms of a duke! \nTwo other popular series\, the Dukes of War and Rogues to Riches\, feature roguish peers and dashing war heroes who find love amongst the splendor and madness of Regency England. \nWhen not reading or writing romances\, Erica can be found eating couscous in Morocco\, zip lining through rainforests in Costa Rica\, or getting hopelessly lost in the middle of Budapest. \n  \nNOTE: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants within 48 hours of the program.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: George Boutwell - The Most Consequential American Political Figure You've Never Heard Of
DESCRIPTION:Listen in as historian Jeffrey S. Boutwell discusses his new biography\, Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy. \nGeorge S. Boutwell is the most consequential American political figure you’ve probably never heard of.  For seven decades\, George Boutwell sought to “redeem America’s promise” through racial equality\, economic equity\, and the humane use of American power abroad.  During his career from 1839 to 1905\, he was Governor of Massachusetts\, served in the U.S. House and Senate\, was Treasury Secretary for Ulysses Grant\, and Commissioner of Internal Revenue for Abraham Lincoln\, he also helped create the Republican Party in the 1850s\, and challenged the efforts of Presidents McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt to annex the Philippines in 1900 following the Spanish-American war.  Boutwell was instrumental in framing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments\, initiating the impeachment of Andrew Johnson\, and investigating white vigilante violence against blacks in Mississippi in the 1870s.   \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Bacon Free Library and the Ashland Public Library.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link.  \n  \nAbout the Author\nJeffrey Boutwell is a writer\, historian\, and science policy specialist living in Columbia\, Maryland\, after a 40-year career in journalism\, government and with international scientific research organizations.  He has written and spoken widely on issues ranging from nuclear weapons arms control to Middle East peace to environmental degradation and conflict.  He’s passionate about Shakespeare\, Alpine skiing\, improving US-Cuba relations\, and road trips in his Mini Cooper.  Jeffrey and George share a common ancestor\, the indentured servant James Boutwell who emigrated in 1632 from England to Salem\, Mass.  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis month\, we will discuss Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach.  \n \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nHere’s an introduction to the book\, excerpted from maryroach.net: \nWhat’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago\, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days\, as  New York Times  best-selling author Mary Roach discovers\, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict\, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology. \nOur discussion will be on Zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - August 23\, 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday August 25\, we will be discussing:\nThe Illumination by Krzysztof Zanussi\, Poland 1973. \nAvailable online HERE\n\n \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

She motors and sails to reach and capture countrysides\, harbors\, and cityscapes of the United States\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Europe\, and Canada on her canvas.  But\, no matter what the actual locales\, the scenes have broad appeal\, reminding us of people and places we remember fondly.  \nCome to the BFL to view her work\, which will be on display from August 28th through October 28th.  You can also enjoy this collection of oil paintings at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) during the month of November.  \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Lobster ShackMorning Outside KillarneyNorth Sea IIVineyard Haven II \n\n \n \n \n \n  \nRobin studied privately for many years with Boston artist\, Joshua Graham.  She is a Fellow of the American Artists Professional League\, as well as an elected member of Audubon Artists and Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club.  Robin’s work has appeared in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions in New York City (e.g.\, American Artists Professional League\, Audubon Artists\, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club) and Greater Boston (e.g.\, Willoughby Fine Art Gallery/Edgartown\, Martha’s Vineyard; The Crane Collection/Wellesley; The Wilson Gallery/Dennis\, Cape Cod;  Carney Gallery/Regis College\, Weston; The Horn Gallery/Babson College\, Wellesley;  Artsfirst Boston; The Ritz-Carlton/Boston; Shreve\, Crump\, and Low/Boston)\, as well as in many other exhibits in New England and in the southern and southwestern states.   \nRobin’s work has garnered many awards\, including the Crimi Award for a Creative Oil\, Audubon Artists (New York City); Judge’s Certificate of Merit\, Red River Valley Museum (Vernon\, TX)\, Third Place Oil/Acrylic Award\, Red River Valley Museum (Vernon\, TX); Allied Artists of America Award\, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts (Avon\, CT); Guilia Palermo Award\, Audubon Artists (New York City); Honorable Mentions\, Havre de Grace Arts Commission (Havre de Grace\, MD) and National Society of Artists (Houston); Scholarship Award\, American Women Artists (Santa Fe); and the Cecilia Cardman Memorial Award\, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club (New York City).  Robin lives in Waltham.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

\nFor Monday September 29\, we will be discussing:\n \n\nMon oncle d’Amerique (My uncle from America) by Alain Resnais\, France 1980\n\n\nDVD available on MLN HERE\nAlso available on Criterion Channel\n\n\n \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Virtual: Who REALLY Wrote Shakespeare? with Author and Historian David Kruh
DESCRIPTION:Who Really penned all the works attributed to Shakespeare?  The doubts have been around for over 300 years.  How could William Shakespeare — a man who never sailed — have written with such accuracy about sailing in The Tempest?  Or how — without studying law — could he have written with such insight about lawyers\, courts\, and legal issues\, in plays such as Henry IV?  Or — without ever serving in the military — written so splendidly of the rigors and technical aspects of war as he did in Hamlet?  That he couldn’t and didn’t is a fascinating concept that has amused many\, tantalized others\, and consumed the lives of a few\, including a Boston man who\, in 1916\, went to court to prove that someone other than Shakespeare wrote all those great works.  Before you laugh… he won the case.  \nHear the story of one man’s search for the “real” author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare and how — in a stunning piece of historical irony — that search played a role in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and we’re collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities. \n  \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \nAbout the Author\nDavid Kruh is a former New Yorker and a 1978 graduate of the University of Maryland.  While earning his Masters in Computer Engineering at Boston University\, David worked as an engineer at WRKO Radio.  He has also worked full time as a copywriter\, computer programmer\, radio producer\, radio engineer\, and\, for a few years in the mid-1990s\, as a spokesman and web master for the Big Dig.  He retired a few years ago from a semiconductor manufacturer\, where he was the direct marketing manager.  He is also the author of several other books\, notably two on Boston’s Scollay Square and Building Route 128.   David’s most recent book is Inseparable\, based on the audacious 1962 escape by three inmates from Alcatraz.  \n  \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.  \n
