SUMMARY:Virtual: Death in the National Parks: Who\, How\, and Why with Author Randi Minetor
DESCRIPTION:Why do some people lose their lives in America’s national parks? Randi Minetor\, author of seven books in the nonfiction Death in the National Parks series\, will explore the fatal mistakes people make when they venture into unfamiliar wilderness. Some forget critical steps in their preparation\, forging off into wild lands far too challenging for their level of experience. Some refuse advice\, ignoring warnings from rangers and more seasoned adventurers. Others are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time\, becoming victims of a lightning strike or a falling rock—or ravenous grizzly bears. And some fall prey to human predators. \nRandi will share highlights of her in-depth research and what it reveals about the people who perish in the parks. Most importantly\, she will provide tips on how to avoid your own disaster in a national park. Be ready for your summer vacation plans with this pertinent and\, probably\, humorous presentation!  \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and is in collaboration with the Chelmsford\, Groton\, and Tewksbury Libraries and is in partnership with a multitude of MA & NH libraries.   \nPlease register here for the Zoom link.  \n  \nAbout the Author\nBorn and raised in Rochester\, NY\, Randi Minetor discovered the backcountry wonders of America’s national parks in 1992 with her husband\, photographer/lighting designer Nic Minetor. That first trip changed her life\, and by 2000\, the Minetors had pledged to see all 391 (now 429) national parks in their lifetimes. They found a way to subsidize this passion in 2006\, when they began writing and photographing books on the parks for The Globe Pequot Press (now Rowman & Littlefield). Today Randi has written more than 90 books\, including seven books in the nonfiction Death in the National Parks series\, ten hiking guides in New York State\, several bird-finding guides\, and even reference books on health topics. To date\, they have visited 354 national parks. In addition\, Nic’s photography appears in eight Quick Reference Guides to the Birds\, Trees\, and Wildflowers of New York City and New York State\, and The Trees and Wildflowers of the Mid-Atlantic States. The Minetors live in Rochester\, NY. \n  \nNote: This program will be recorded and a link will be sent to all registrants soon after the program. It will be available on YouTube for one month.  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday June 30\, we will be discussing: \nMcCabe & Mrs. Miller by Robert Altman \nUSA 1971. \nAvailable on Kanopy HERE\nCriterion DVD available in the Minuteman network  HERE\n\n \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Virtual: "Heal the Beasts - A Jaunt through the Curious History of the Veterinary Arts" with Author and Veterinarian Philipp Schott
DESCRIPTION:  \nAuthor and veterinarian\, Philipp Schott\, DVM will be on hand to discuss his new book\, Heal the Beasts: A Jaunt Through the Curious History of the Veterinary Arts.  This history of veterinary medicine provides an abundance of bizarre\, funny\, surprising\, and heartwarming anecdotes. Heal the Beasts chronicles human efforts to treat animal illnesses from 14\,000 BCE to today. \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \n  \nAbout the book Heal the Beasts\nHow and why did humans begin to treat sick and injured animals? And how did those practices\, and the associated attitudes\, evolve from prehistory to the present day? \nTo answer these questions\, Dr. Schott shares stories of 22 different animal healers and veterinarians from across eras and continents\, examining the always fascinating\, often unexpected\, and sometimes hilarious veterinary methods employed by these people and their colleagues.  At the heart of the book lies the evolution of the human-animal bond\, which has been more cyclical than linear.  In many ways\, we are returning to the outlook of our distant ancestors after a centuries-long detour through a more utilitarian approach. \nJames Herriot will be familiar to many people\, but most of the other featured vets will be new.  They range from Palakapya\, who treated fighting elephants in India almost 3\,000 years ago\, to Dr. Louis Camuti\, who had the first feline house call practice anywhere\, tending to the cats of celebrities in mid-20th-century Manhattan.  Along the way\, Dr. Schott introduces every kind of person trying to heal every kind of creature\, from dogs\, cows\, horses\, and cats to canaries\, gorillas\, and even dragons. \nWhether you have a passion for animals\, the history of medicine\, or just quirky history\, this light-hearted exploration of the empathetic relationship between man and beast will entertain and delight. \n  \nAbout the Author\nPhilipp Schott\, DVM was born in Germany in 1965.  A year later his family emigrated to Saskatoon\, Canada\, where he grew up\, with regular family visits to Germany. Philipp studied biology and veterinary medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation in 1990 he moved to Winnipeg with his classmate and future wife\, Lorraine. Except for a year taken to backpack around the world\, he has been in the same Winnipeg small animal practice since 1990. \nPhilipp’s writing began with blogging about travel and veterinary medicine. His first book\, The Accidental Veterinarian\, was published by ECW Press in 2019. \nLorraine and Philipp live in a creaky old house on the river with two young adult children and a young cat.  Philipp enjoys spending time outdoors in self-propelled activities\, particularly long-distance walking. He has completed the West Highland Way\, Hadrian’s Wall\, the Laugevegurinn\, and the Inca Trail\, among others.  \n  \nIf you’d like to purchase a signed copy of Philipp’s book\, you can do so through Aesop’s Fable.  In the “notes” section of checkout\, write that you would like the book signed. \nNOTE: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants.

SUMMARY:Virtual: "Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal" with author Samuel Marquis
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to chat with author Samuel Marquis about his most recent book\, Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal\,  which is both thrilling and tragic.  Behind the legend is a real man woven into the tapestry of early America\, rendering him a unique colonial hero and scapegoat whose life story was fascinating\, exciting\, bizarre\, and heartrending.  Doesn’t that sound fascinating? We hope you can join us!  \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link. \n  \n  \nAbout the book Captain Kidd\nCaptain William Kidd stands as one of the most notorious “pirate” outlaws ever\, but his legend is tainted by a bed of lies.  Having captivated imaginations for more than 300 years and inspired many stories about pirates\, troubling questions remain.  Was he really a criminal or is the truth more inconvenient: that he was a buccaneer’s worst nightmare\, a revered pirate hunter turned fall guy for scheming politicians? \nIn Captain Kidd\, his ninth-great-grandson\, bestselling author Samuel Marquis\, reveals the real story.  Kidd was an English-American privateer and New York husband and father.  The King of England himself dubbed Kidd “trusty and well-beloved\,” and some historians describe him as a “worthy\, honest-hearted\, steadfast\, much-enduring sailor” who was the “victim of a deliberate travesty of justice.”  With honors far more esteemed than the menacing Blackbeard\, or any other sea rover at the turn of the 17th century\, how can Kidd be considered both gentleman and pirate\, both hero and villain? \nMarquis’ biography recreates Kidd’s perilous world of explosive naval warfare and the daring integrity he exemplified as a pirate hunter\, as well as the political scandal that entangled Kidd in British–American history\, rocking the New World and the Old\, and threatening England’s valuable trade with India. \nAbout the Author\nThe ninth great-grandson of legendary privateer Captain William Kidd\, Samuel Marquis is a Colorado #1 bestselling and award-winning American history and historical fiction author.  He works by day as a VP–Principal Hydrogeologist with an environmental consulting firm in Boulder\, Colorado\, and by night as a writer of the world’s most heralded and entertaining historical works (hyperbole intended).  \nLearn much more about Samuel on his website. \nIf you’d like to purchase a signed copy of Samuel’s book\, you can do so through Aesop’s Fable.  In the “notes” section of checkout\, write that you would like the book signed. \n  \nNOTE: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants.
