SUMMARY:Great Blue Herons: A Study of Patience and Grace by Babsje
DESCRIPTION:“Alas\, my days of photographing the magnificent Great Blue Herons from the cockpit of my kayak floating on the lake have come to an end.” Posted by Babsje on December 20\, 2023\, shortly before her death in January. babsjeheron.wordpress.com. \nBabsje was a local photographer who focused her lens on the Great Blue Herons in and around Lake Cochituate and on the Charles\, including at the dam in South Natick. She spent many very happy days floating in her kayak\, and the herons became so accustomed to her quiet presence that she was able to beautifully document their private grandeur for all to experience.  \nShe is greatly missed. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Babsje_HappyBabsje Yoga Heron 3Babsje Yoga Heron 2Great blue heron preening Columbus Day weekend.Babsje great-blue-heron-fishing-near-reedsBabsje Yoga Heron 1 \n\n \n \n \n \n  \nVisit the BFL to enjoy Babsje’s stunning photography collection\, Great Blue Herons: A Study of Patience and Grace. \nPhotographs are available for purchase upon request \nAll proceeds from sales will be donated to Massachusetts Audubon Society \n

SUMMARY:Decoding the Mysteries of Cats\, or Why Cats Do What They do
DESCRIPTION: \n\nThe BFL is happy to host Certified Feline Training and Behavior Specialist Stephen Quandt for a virtual discussion of cat behavior.  Why does your kitty launch drive-by ankle biting attacks?  Does she really have to wake you up so early for food?  And what is with the overly aggressive play-fighting between the two tabbies? \nStephen Quandt\, behavior expert who has worked with the Animal Care Centers of NYC and the ASPCA\, will explain these common cat behaviors from the perspective of the evolutionary and adaptive forces that help shape their furry lives.  For example\, he’ll explain the influence of the mother/kitten relationship on the kittens’ innate needs for food\, attention\, and comfort. \nThis discussion will include a Q& A portion where you can seek guidance for your feline friends. \n\nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register below to receive the program link.  \n  \n\n \n \n Decoding the Mysteries of Cats\, or Why Cats Do What They Do\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday May 27 \nWe will be discussing:  \nJeanne Dielman\, 23 Quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles by Chantal Akerman\, Belgium/France 1975.  \n\n \nDVD available on the Minuteman HERE\n \n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:The Dogs of Chernobyl: a Story of Hope and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Animal welfare expert Stephen Quandt was part of a group that traveled to Chernobyl\, 35 years after the nuclear accident\, to participate in a spay/neuter and research campaign for the dogs that were descended from the pets left behind after the nuclear plant disaster of 1986.  \nIn this presentation\, Stephen chronicles his experiences in the Exclusion Zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.  Through photos and videos\, Stephen tells his story of meeting the inhabitants of the mostly abandoned town of Chernobyl City (you will meet 2 squatters\, one a hero of the disaster)\, the totally abandoned city of Pripyat\, and the dogs (and some cats!) that his group encountered. He will discuss the presence of radiation in this environment as well as its effects on the dogs’ lives.  You will also meet some inhabitants of the town of Slavutych\, which was built in the year following the accident to house the inhabitants of Pripyat after they were belatedly evacuated. \nThe Dogs of Chernobyl is a story of resilience\, hope\, life\, and even heroism.  Stephen will answer your questions at the end of the presentation.  \n  \nStephen Quandt\, Feline Behaviorist\, FFCP\, most recently with the Animal Care Centers of NYC (nycacc.org) and also of the ASPCA.org\, has worked in animal welfare for more than 20 years.  \n\nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register below to receive the program link.  \n  \n\n \n \n The Dogs of Chernobyl\, A Story of Hope and Resilience\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we will discuss The Feather Thief: beauty\, obsession\, and the natural history heist of the century by Kirk Wallace Johnson.   \nPraise for this book from Eva Holland of Outside: “The best compliment I can give a nonfiction writer is that they make me care deeply about an obscure topic I would otherwise never have been interested in. That’s the case with Kirk Wallace Johnson’s The Feather Thief.” \nThe obscure topic at hand is the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying and the brazen theft–by a passionate fly-tier–of hundreds of bird skins from the Tring Museum in 2009.  Located about an hour outside of London\, the Tring Museum is an outpost of the British Museum of Natural History and home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world. \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nOur discussion will be held over zoom.  Please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - June 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

\nFor Monday June 24 \n\n\nWe will be discussing: \nMulholland Drive by David Lynch\, USA 2001\n\n\n\n\nDVD available on the Minuteman HERE\nAlso available On Criterion\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Marie Picard Craig Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION: \nMarie Craig uses cyanotype photography to explore the overlap between concrete bodies\, or still moments\, and the life instilled in them. Her photographs capture places of formative choice\, incorporating both intention and chance.  \nCyanotype photographs (sometimes called sunprints) are made without a camera by placing objects on paper or fabric that is coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it in the sun and rinsing with water to produce deep blue images. Marie loves the beautiful blue color of the images\, which she sometimes embellishes with other bright colors or beads. \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n _2drFUgS6i8AqUhib7IoNv-XEBKgdU1khC3JdREYLmufmXsjx8_FM2CwYUVMoogP \n\n \n \n \n \n  \nMarie began her career as a medical photographer and illustrator after graduating from Clark University in Worcester with a master’s degree in biology. She later shifted her role to become a teacher\, curator\, photographer\, and gallerist\, all in the fine art community. Marie has shown her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the US and Australia. In 2011 she co-founded Fountain Street Gallery in Boston and serves as its director. She lives and works in Natick. \nTo learn more about Marie and her work:  \nhttps://mariecraigart.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/mariecraigphoto \n
