SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday February 5 \nWe will be discussing: Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock\, USA 1958 \nDVD available HERE\n \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Featured Artists - Carol Keefe & Bobby Reeve
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit pairs the lush ocean landscapes of Carol Keefe with the true-to-life bird sculptures of Bobby Reeve.  Visit the BFL to enjoy this nature-themed exhibit\, and come to meet the artists during our opening reception on Tuesday\, February 13th at 5:30pm. \n  \nCarol Keefe\nCarol Keefe is a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN)\, and is represented at their gallery.  She has had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007.  In 2014\, Carol was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the AAN.  Carol has studied at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools\, as well as with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin.   Carol’s work is displayed at Brown Basket Gallery on South Wharf\, the Nantucket Looms\, The Sherborn Inn\, Natick Artist Open Studios\, and numerous private collections\, as well as in her home studio near Cisco Beach and South Natick. \nCarol’s art\, in her own words: \nI am inspired by the ever-changing light and color at the horizon. My medium of choice is oil on board or canvas. My paintings are often large\, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast. \n  \nBobby Reeve\nFor over 50 years\, Bobby Reeve has been a woodworker in New Hampshire and Massachusetts doing house carpentry and running a one-man shop for furniture making and bird carvings. Both his parents were watercolorists and he started painting with their mentor\, Harold Stevenson\, many years ago. \nBobby’s art\, in his own words: \nI always wanted to fly\, and I don’t mean in a plane! Somehow this explains my love of birds — their flight\, colors\, shapes\, songs\, and behaviors. I love the idea of a “bird’s eye view” and carving and sculpting almost get me there.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to grow seeds from winter sowing. Winter sowing is a\nprocess of using a milk jug\, filling it with soil and seeds\, and then\nsetting it outside in a sunny but protected area. In the class you will\nselect one seed packet for your winter sowing jug. All material will be\nprovided – jug\, seeds\, soil\, water\, tape\, and pen – so you will leave with\none completed winter sowing jug. There will be time for questions\, on\nwhere to place your winter sowing jug\, how to manage seedlings\, best\nseeds for winter sowing\, paper versus plastic pots\, etc.. Also everyone\nin class is invited back to the EcoNatick/Earth Day celebration on\n4/27/24 at BFL to take part in a seedling exchange. \nMonica Foley has been gardening since she was a little girl. She is\ninterested in native plants\, herbs\, flowers\, wildlife habitats\, floral\ndesigns and has been winter sowing for the past ten years. \n\n \n\n \n \n Winter Sowing - In-Person\n \n \n Name*Email*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

\nFor Monday February 26 \nWe will be discussing: Little Otik by Jan Švankmajer\, Czech Republic 2000 \nAvailable on DVD HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Exciting Discoveries in Art History with Mallory Mortillaro (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Art Historian\, Mallory Mortillaro is back to share with us Exciting Discoveries in Art History. From Mallory…. \nWho doesn’t love learning about a priceless painting found in an attic? Or a sculpture sitting for decades in a public garden\, only to be found out as an Italian treasure?  After finding myself in the middle of my own art history discovery when I uncovered the provenance of a Rodin sculpture sitting in New Jersey town hall\, I learned just how many times this has happened before.  This lecture explores the stories of several different important and valuable works of art that have been rediscovered in unexpected places.  The program reviews a brief background of each piece\, artist\, and how the piece got to be lost\, and then found. \nPlease register below to receive the Zoom link. \n\n \n \n Exciting Discoveries in Art History with Mallory Mortillaro\n \n \n Name*Email\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n\n  \n  \n

\nFor Monday March 25 \nWe will be discussing:  Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie by Luis Buñuel\, France/Spain/Italy 1972 \nAvailable on DVD HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net
