SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday October 25\nwe will be discussing: \nYeelen by Souleymane Cissé\, Mali 1987. \nAvailable on KANOPY \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Nonfiction book club
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. We explore it all in this book club. \n**Please note this month we are meeting on the 3rd Saturday. \nJoin us for a discussion of One Day: The Extraordinary Story of an Ordinary 24 Hours in America by Gene Weingarten. \nAccording to goodreads.com “On New Year’s Day 2013\, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Gene Weingarten asked three strangers to\, literally\, pluck a day\, month\, and year from a hat. That day–chosen completely at random–turned out to be Sunday\, December 28\, 1986\, by any conventional measure a most ordinary day. Weingarten spent the next six years proving that there is no such thing.” \nOur discussion will be held over Zoom.  Please register to receive the Zoom link: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - July 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

\nFor Monday November 29\nwe will be discussing: \nIn the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-Wai\, Hong Kong\, 2000. \nDVD available in the Minuteman HERE (Criterion) and HERE \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:History of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that from 1659 to 1681\, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston\, and law-breakers were fined five shillings for breaking the law?   Irish historian Sean Murphy will explain this oddity and many others in the winding history of Christmas through the ages. From the ancient societies who celebrated the winter equinox to the Roman Christians who built on those traditions to the practices of more modern times\, Mr. Murphy will guide you through it all in his History of Christmas presentation. You’ll also learn about the rich yuletide traditions in Ireland and enjoy music and videos of the season. \nSean Murphy\, is a teacher of Irish history\, music\, and dance. Over the past 12 years he has taught courses at the Irish Cultural Center of New England in Canton\, Cape Cod Sons of Erin\, Cape Cod Cultural Center\, the Cotuit Center for the Arts\, and at venues on Nantucket.  He speaks on Irish cultural\, historic\, and general issues at libraries\, and at private and community events across the Cape and beyond.  \nThe BFL is cohosting this program with the Bigelow Free Public Library and four other libraries. This program will be held over Zoom. Please register at the Bigelow Library website to receive the Zoom meeting link.

We’re finding ways to become more engaged and participatory in the natural world\, educating ourselves on the climate challenges we face and looking at the history and philosophy of how the environment has been viewed through the ages.  \nThe BFL is collaborating with Broadmoor\, Mass Audubon with this book group. We thank them for sharing their mission with us. \nPlease email glesellier@minlib.net for the Zoom meeting details.
