SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday April 24\nwe will be discussing:  \nThe World by Jia Zhang-ke\, China 2004 \nDVD available in Minuteman Network HERE \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Art Opening Reception: Shannon Slattery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception to welcome Shannon Slattery to the BFL and to view her stunning artwork.  Shannon Slattery will be exhibiting semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by mid-coast Maine from May 4th through June 14th here at the BFL. These works are painted in acrylic paint on reclaimed masonite panels. Inspired by the woods and coastline of the mid coast\, they exist in the space between drawing and painting\, representation and abstraction. \n \nShannon reflects on her work and her process: “The trees are sentinels\, bell weathers and guardians\, if we protect them they will care for us. It is critical that we preserve and protect the natural world\, it is our home. More recently I have been drawn to the places where the rocks meet the sea. I continue to find inspiration in the shapes and textures of those rocks\, and how they have been shaped by the ocean waves. I am intrigued by the idea that the rocks have been there for so long and will continue to be long after we are gone. As a painter I am guided by process\, I apply paint by any and all means and will just as often wipe\, sand\, or scrape the board as paint with a brush. At the intersection of drawing and painting\, color\, line\, and texture are the means to describe what I see and how I connect to my environment.” \nShannon is an artist and a teacher. She has a Bachelor of Studio Art from Skidmore College and a Masters of Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art. She is on the Board of the Newton Art Association and has been teaching Fine Art at Newton North High School for the last 24 years. She is an avid birder\, hiker\, and enjoyer of the outdoors. \nTo learn more about Shannon and to see her work\, visit her website at https://sslattery.com/ \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n*Please note: this month we are meeting on the 3rd Saturday (the 4th Saturday is on Memorial day weekend and the library is closed) \n\nThis month\, we will discuss Beautiful Country: a memoir of an undocumented childhood by Qian Julie Wang.   \nAbout this memoir\, from Penguin Random House:  “In Chinese\, the word for America\, Mei Guo\, translates directly to ‘beautiful country.’ Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity\, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China\, Qian’s parents were professors; in America\, her family is ‘illegal’ and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive.” \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \n  \nOur discussion will be held in a hybrid format.  The host will be in person at the BFL\, while some members will join over zoom.  You are welcome to join either way.  For zoom\, please register here to receive the meeting details: \n\n \n \n Nonfiction Book Club Registration - August 23\, 2025\n \n \n your nameemail*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:(Virtually) Explore the Lowell National Historic Park
DESCRIPTION:The Bacon Free Library invites you to a lunchtime excursion\, without needing to leave your home or office.  Each Wednesday through the end of May\, enjoy a virtual talk given by the National Park Service about a local historic site. \n\n**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Learn about this National Historical Park with Supervisory Park Ranger Tess Shatzer. \nRegister directly on Zoom HERE. \nNOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 24 hours of the program. \n\nThis National Park Service series is presented by the Bacon Free Library in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library. \n  \n

\nFor Monday May 29\nwe will be discussing: La Règle du jeu by Jean Renoir\, France 1939 \nAvailable on Kanopy HERE \nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dick Lehr
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to welcome author\, journalist\, and professor Dick Lehr back to the BFL to talk about his latest book\, White Hot Hate.  This book details the gripping true story of an averted domestic terrorist attack against a Kansas farming town’s immigrant Somali community. Crucial to this story is the FBI informant who exposed the murderous plot.  Dan Day\, an average guy who went to the police with his concerns\, became an FBI informant.  Lehr also narrated the podcast adaptation of this story\, ABC News Truth and Lies: The Informant.  Copies of this book will be available to purchase for $15; cash only please.  \n \n  \nDick Lehr\, a professor of journalism at Boston University\, is the author of seven award-winning works of nonfiction and fiction. Lehr previously wrote for the Boston Globe\, where he was a member of its Spotlight Team\, a special projects reporter and a magazine writer. While at the Globe he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in investigative reporting.
