SUMMARY:Nature Photography by Lia Vito
DESCRIPTION:Lia Vito has brought the autumnal beauty of Acadia National Park to the walls of the BFL.  Come in to enjoy her photography featuring the rich golden hues of the Maine foliage along with up-close and personal peaks into wild birds in action.  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n waterstonestairsowlfamilyheronfamilynestbirdfish3herons \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nLia’s work\, in her own words:\nMy interest in action photography led me to a fascination with birds and other wildlife. Observing their behaviors and interactions has been educational as well as entertaining. \nWith a telephoto lens and lots of patience\, I have been able to capture special moments like the ones I have on exhibit here. These interactions between members of bird families warm my heart. \nI love visiting Acadia National Park. I have observed many beautiful natural scenes there and tried to do justice to them with my images. \n

SUMMARY:Carlos Santiago Art
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Santiago’s still lifes walk a line between representational and abstract art\, with his primary source of inspiration being flowers and vases. In flowers\, he finds complicated patterns\, shapes\, and repetition; elements that show up in all of his paintings. \nPlease join us for a reception with Carlos on Tuesday\, December 17th.  You can also enjoy his paintings through January 22nd. \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n pinkanglespinkpurplemulticolor \n\n \n \n \n \n  \nCarlos has developed a signature technique that employs a sharp edge to create clean straight lines that extend the limits of his subjects\, adding drama and energy and a bold recognition to each painting. His use of shadow plays an important role in his work\, enhancing the contrast between the darkness and his vivid colors. \nCarlos doesn’t simply paint the still life subjects he sees\, but the dream-like gestures that he feels. Working with familiar compositions\, he hopes to create artwork that conveys not only the visual reality of his subjects\, but the vibrant extension of energy into their surroundings. \nCarlos Santiago is from Caguas\, Puerto Rico. He obtained his BFA in fine art from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah\, Georgia. He subsequently worked for ten years as a design professional in the fashion industry in New York City. Now\, Carlos lives and works in Boston\, Ma. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tom Doran: Ease Your Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a desire to reconcile structure with chance\, Tom Doran creates unique digital compositions that layer photography and previous artworks. Informed by years of jazz improvisation and the tactile nature of paper collage\, his process embraces spontaneity and a pursuit of balance between order and disorder. Tom values fundamental artistic principles\, yet intentionally introduces ambiguity to ignite curiosity and encourage viewers to venture beyond familiar perspectives. While often abstract\, his pieces resonate with an underlying “soul” and subtly reference the organic forms and energies of nature. Ultimately\, Tom aims to craft works that prompt personal interpretation and reveal unseen possibilities\, echoing the belief that compelling art poses questions and offers new ways of seeing. \nAccording to Tom: “I use color and texture to challenge but also soothe you. While I don’t require beauty to be an element of my work\, I value beauty hence Ease Your Eyes.” \nCome to the BFL to view Tom’s work\, which will be on display from November 5th through January 28th.  You can also enjoy his work at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) in the Spring of 2026.  \n  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Doran_silverDoran_redDoran_green \n\n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nTom’s art career didn’t actually begin with art. Instead it started with music. First\, rock\, in the soul\, funk\, and r&b area\, then on to jazz. The jazz aesthetic provided the basis for his art: study and be well prepared so that when it’s time to improvise- make the leap! \nTwenty years ago he began improvising with collage and paint. Now his art is in the digital domain but he uses the same techniques\, now called “pixel collages”: Use original images\, find things to work together\, keep it fresh\, improvise. Tom is fascinated by nature\, geometry\, and strong colors so all of that comes out in his pictures\, which he describes as a collision of nature and the modern world; at times ironic\, funny\, eye candy-like\, digital\, abstract\, and hopefully\, fun. \nTom is a proficient jazz bassist and singer who is mostly self taught\, he is mainly a self-taught artist as well.  His influences include Picasso\, Matisse\, Joseph Stella\, Juan Gris\, Georgia O’Keefe\, Lee Krazner\, Arthur Dove\, Gerhard Richter\, Romare Beardon\, Sam Gilliam\, and Mark Bradford. \nTom says: “Please judge me by my work.” \n

These photos have won numerous international awards and have been shown and sold at the prestigious Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) exposition in NYC.  Karin’s photographic submission in First Doubt: Optical Confusion in Modern Photography at YUAG was selected to represent the show of 100 images by famous 20th Century photographers and was featured in the New York Times review.   \nAt the Griffin Museum of Photography in 2016\, she curated 37 Photographers/One Model with nudes in nature by her and her workshop students of a male dancer in his fifties\, overturning conventions of nude photography.  As a Resident Artist/Scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center\, she initiated and oversaw an exhibition of photographs by Vivian Maier in 2013.  In 2018-2019\, she exhibited at Brandeis’ Kniznick Gallery in a two-person show\, Half-Silvered. A book entitled Karin Rosenthal: Twenty Years of Photographs was published in conjunction with a retrospective of her Nudes in Water series at the Danforth Museum in 2000. \nLearn more about Karin on her website\, Facebook\, and Instagram. \n  \n
