SUMMARY:Circus in a Suitcase
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fabulous performance by the One-Man Circus in-a-Suitcase. It’s everything you’d expect to see at the circus\, all out of one suitcase! \nKevin O’Keefe\, the One-Man Circus in-a-Suitcase gives everyone an opportunity to participate in an enthralling\, whimsical celebration of the imagination. \nFrom Kevin O’Keefe’s suitcase an entire circus emerges: tent\, band\, lights\, the boisterous ringmaster Steve Fitzpatrick\, the officious Mervin Merkle\, the incredible Bumbilini Family\, the Magician-to-the-Stars Clyde Zerbini\, and Keefer–an innocent trying to runaway and join the circus. \nHowever\, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience–a light-hearted collaboration. \nThis show has been performed over 500 times around the globe\, for family theater audiences and school assemblies alike.  \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Bacon Free Library. \nLearn more about Circus Minimus here. \n

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Samantha Eio
DESCRIPTION:Starting today\, visit the Bacon to view the beautiful nature-inspired paintings of local artist and BFL patron Samantha Eio.  Samantha’s landscape series\, In Nature\, will be displayed until January 4th. An opening reception will be held on Saturday\, October 1st from 12:20-1:30 pm. It’s free and open to the public. \nSamantha Eio is a self-taught landscape artist who works in acrylic and watercolor paint. She enjoys the challenge of capturing the space or feeling of a place through drawing and painting. She is inspired by the natural world — forests\, trails\, the sky\, the ocean\, sunlight\, and shadows. Samantha is also moved by the dichotomy of the fast-paced world we live in and the struggle to find peace and stillness within. She works to portray this in creating a sense of movement with her brushstrokes and lines\, along with a sense of calm through her choice of subject\, paint colors\, and tones. Her paintings feature meaningful locations from throughout New England\, many from right here in Natick. She hopes artwork makes you\, the viewer or collector\, want to get outdoors and to explore. \nSamantha is originally from Northern New Jersey. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University\, and draws on her architectural background often for her artwork. She is a member of the Natick Art Association\, the Dedham Art Association\, and the Wellesley Society of Artists. Her work has been exhibited locally\, and her painting “To Venture On” will soon be part of the permanent collection at PNC Bank at Dedham Legacy Place. Samantha resides in Natick with her family. She also enjoys trail running\, playing the piano\, and listening to way too many audiobooks.

SUMMARY:Art Opening Reception: Lisa Hayden
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Hayden\, a contemporary artist from Northboro\, will be exhibiting a collection of paintings from March 3rd to May 2nd at the BFL.  With an abstract take on the natural world and a deep love of the ocean\, Lisa brings the outdoors inside. \nJoin us for an opening reception\, free & open to the public\, to celebrate Lisa’s beautiful work. \nLisa is a Massachusetts native who studied painting at the University of Miami where the vibrant world of South Florida has combined with a life in New England to form a lasting influence on her art for 30 years. She exhibits her work at art fairs and gallery shows throughout New England and is active with ArtsWorcester. \n\nLisa paints in acrylic using a palette of greens and blues\, with works ranging from fully abstract to abstracted landscapes and seascapes. A creative force in her work is a love of the ocean and nature; paintings often explore the intersection of human feelings and the natural world. An expression of both abstract concepts and landscapes through color\, texture and motion is behind each piece of art. \n\nVisit her website www.MeltedTheory.com for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Art Opening Reception: Shannon Slattery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception to welcome Shannon Slattery to the BFL and to view her stunning artwork.  Shannon Slattery will be exhibiting semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by mid-coast Maine from May 4th through June 14th here at the BFL. These works are painted in acrylic paint on reclaimed masonite panels. Inspired by the woods and coastline of the mid coast\, they exist in the space between drawing and painting\, representation and abstraction. \n \nShannon reflects on her work and her process: “The trees are sentinels\, bell weathers and guardians\, if we protect them they will care for us. It is critical that we preserve and protect the natural world\, it is our home. More recently I have been drawn to the places where the rocks meet the sea. I continue to find inspiration in the shapes and textures of those rocks\, and how they have been shaped by the ocean waves. I am intrigued by the idea that the rocks have been there for so long and will continue to be long after we are gone. As a painter I am guided by process\, I apply paint by any and all means and will just as often wipe\, sand\, or scrape the board as paint with a brush. At the intersection of drawing and painting\, color\, line\, and texture are the means to describe what I see and how I connect to my environment.” \nShannon is an artist and a teacher. She has a Bachelor of Studio Art from Skidmore College and a Masters of Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art. She is on the Board of the Newton Art Association and has been teaching Fine Art at Newton North High School for the last 24 years. She is an avid birder\, hiker\, and enjoyer of the outdoors. \nTo learn more about Shannon and to see her work\, visit her website at https://sslattery.com/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Featured Artist - Barbara Levine
DESCRIPTION:Barbara paints in oils and in gouache. She loves the texture and fluidity of oil paints and the ease with which you can layer the paint. She says that although gouache is a water based paint and can be used in ways similar to watercolors\, it is more opaque and can be layered as well. She notes that these days both have an enormous variety of colors available to use and to mix.  \nBarbara learned to paint primarily “en plein air” in a New England impressionist tradition and she says that it has been a wonderful adventure for her. She comments that being outside trying to capture in paint the light at particular moments as it flows onto or around the forms one is looking at can be extremely exhilarating. \n  \nBarbara has a Masters Degree in Social Work and many\, many years of postgraduate trainings in the field of psychotherapy. She says that she is sometimes tempted to say her work is somewhat disconnected from painting but realizes that it has taught her to be especially observant and aware of subtle visual nuances which has helped in her painting. Her training in painting has been through years of local\, national and international workshops. Her teachers have included: Gloucester artist David Curtis\, Boston artists George Nick\, Charlotte Gibbs\, Robert Cormier\, and Michael Dowling\, Israeli artist Elie Shamir\, and nationally and internationally known artists Kelly Carmody\, Victor Butko\, Scott Christenson\, Ann Blair Brown\, Lori Putnam\, and Kevin Macpherson.

DESCRIPTION: \nElizabeth Cohen is an artist in the Boston area\, creating wheel-thrown and altered functional and sculptural work in porcelain\, as well as mixed media with natural material such as wasp nest\, mushroom spores and mulberry paper. Organic elements in nature\, such as flowers\, fruits\, seeds\, shells\, and plants\, inform her work. She explores cycles of birth\, life and death\, growth and decay\, rhythm and change. She also explores varied metaphorical nuances\, such as family\, security and comfort\, in nesting sets. She holds a B.A. in English from Tufts University and a M.A. T. from Simmons College.\n \n\n\nElizabeth’s statement on her exhibition at the Bacon: Long mulberry tree fibers of hanji paper allow me to sculpt with my hands and water (my version of the Korean traditional joomchi technique). I seek to capture “komorebi”\, the Japanese word for sunlight filtering through the trees\, as well as other feelings from the natural world. SUMMARY:Featured Artist - Ryan Black
DESCRIPTION:Artist Ryan Black works out of his South Natick-based studio.  His art features representational oil paintings along with some printmaking and drawing. While Ryan’s work portrays a range of subjects\, recently he is most associated with his atmospheric cityscapes\, mainly featuring Boston.  Ryan’s work will be on display at the BFL from December 15th to February 7th. \n \n\n\nRyan’s art\, in his own words: \nI love talking about art. I love jargon\, references\, challenging viewpoints and deciphering meaning in other artist’s compositions. But artists shouldn’t talk about or attempt to explain their own work because\, to paraphrase Francis Bacon\, explanation doesn’t deepen the mystery. \nEverything to know about my paintings is either there on the canvas\, or it isn’t. Spelling it out will not make it better\, just like a joke isn’t funny if you have to explain it. \nI’m not saying my artwork has some deeper meaning. I’m saying all good art refers and reflects back\, creating its time and place in the world. Bringing something to the table\, as far as a basic understanding of aesthetics and art history\, will always make experiencing artwork more immersive and enjoyable. Its meaning isn’t hidden\, just very few people go looking for it. \nI try to make good art. Hopefully it’s there on the canvas.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists - Carol Keefe & Bobby Reeve
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit pairs the lush ocean landscapes of Carol Keefe with the true-to-life bird sculptures of Bobby Reeve.  Visit the BFL to enjoy this nature-themed exhibit\, and come to meet the artists during our opening reception on Tuesday\, February 13th at 5:30pm. \n  \nCarol Keefe\nCarol Keefe is a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN)\, and is represented at their gallery.  She has had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007.  In 2014\, Carol was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the AAN.  Carol has studied at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools\, as well as with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin.   Carol’s work is displayed at Brown Basket Gallery on South Wharf\, the Nantucket Looms\, The Sherborn Inn\, Natick Artist Open Studios\, and numerous private collections\, as well as in her home studio near Cisco Beach and South Natick. \nCarol’s art\, in her own words: \nI am inspired by the ever-changing light and color at the horizon. My medium of choice is oil on board or canvas. My paintings are often large\, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast. \n  \nBobby Reeve\nFor over 50 years\, Bobby Reeve has been a woodworker in New Hampshire and Massachusetts doing house carpentry and running a one-man shop for furniture making and bird carvings. Both his parents were watercolorists and he started painting with their mentor\, Harold Stevenson\, many years ago. \nBobby’s art\, in his own words: \nI always wanted to fly\, and I don’t mean in a plane! Somehow this explains my love of birds — their flight\, colors\, shapes\, songs\, and behaviors. I love the idea of a “bird’s eye view” and carving and sculpting almost get me there.

SUMMARY:Featured Artist - Rebecca McGee Tuck
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nRebecca McGee Tuck is a sculptor and an ocean activist.  Her work is a visual narrative of what she accumulates from a throw away society and as a result she gives new life to what others discard. Tuck has shown her work in multiple juried shows throughout the Northeast including the Danforth and Fitchburg Art Museums\, Viridian Arts Gallery in NYC\, and the George Marshall Store Gallery in York\, Maine.   \nTuck’s series of work called  “Along the Wrack Line” deals with the overwhelming amount of debris and plastic trash that contaminate our local New England beaches.  Tuck works among her menagerie of debris from her studio at the Mill Contemporary Art Studios in Framingham. \n \n  \nJoin us for an artist’s reception: come to meet Rebecca McGee Tuck on Tuesday\, April 30th from 5:00-6:30PM.  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n wracklineseadebriserosiondogood \n\n \n \n \n \n \nRebecca’s art\, in her own words:\nWrack Line–  A trail of debris left on the beach by the high tide. \nI began walking the wrack line as a kid with my father—attracted to the sea glass and shells like a perpetual seaside treasure hunt.  I learned in time that the real treasures were not always as conspicuous.  The random debris that washed ashore after spending ages enduring the ocean’s churn and grasp held more mystery for me.  Foraging at the high tide water mark has metamorphosed into my passion and catalyst for my work.  \nFishing lines\, rope\, lobster cages and other marine debris are colorful\, full of texture and ready-made to be woven into my assemblage fiber sculpture.  But with each bag of jetsam collected\, I felt the precarious weight of the impact of marine debris on our ocean.  It has overwhelmed me and it became clear that I needed to take a more active role in the ocean’s protection.  \n“Along the Wrack-line” is the title I have given to my ongoing series of sculpture.  With this work I raise awareness to the constant misuse of the ocean’s ecosystem by transforming pieces of marine debris into works of art and symbols of hope calling attention to the consequences of polluting our oceans and encouraging a new commitment to action! \nInstagram: @Rebeccabombshellart /https://www.instagram.com/rebeccabombshellart/ \nFacebook: RebeccaMcGeeTuckArt https://www.facebook.com/rebeccamcgeetuckart/ \nwebsite: Rebeccamcgeetuck.com https://rebeccamcgeetuck.com/
