SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club with Author Erica Ferencik
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special virtual Mystery Book Club discussion of Girl in Ice\, where we will be joined by author Erica Ferencik! This event will be held over Zoom. Please email cstirling@minlib.net to register and receive the Zoom link. \n  \n \nAward-winning novelist Erica Ferencik has received glowing critical praise for her literary thrillers featuring women who face extreme physical challenges in nature\, even as they grapple with internal struggles. \nDevoted to authenticity in her craft\, Erica spent weeks in the wilderness of northern Maine as research for her debut novel\, The River at Night\, an Indie Next Pick that New York Times bestselling author Ruth Ware called “raw\, relentless\, and heart-poundingly real.” For her “hair-raisingly vivid” (Kirkus) follow-up\, Into the Jungle\, Ferencik journeyed a hundred miles up the Amazon to experience firsthand the lush and perilous Peruvian jungle. \nNow\, inspired and informed by a month-long trip to Greenland\, Ferencik sets the New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and Wall Street Journal’s editors’ pick\, GIRL IN ICE\, in one of the most unforgiving\, unforgettable landscapes imaginable. \nRaised in New York\, she currently lives in Massachusetts. Learn more at her website.

SUMMARY:Fragrance in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you have smelled the lovely fragrance of a peony and were immediately transported back to a time long ago in your grandmother’s garden. Have you ever wondered why that is? Joanne Pearson is back to enlighten us about the power of aroma and its importance in the garden. \nIn this program\, we’ll look at the amazing things that scent does for a plant (botanically\, that is\, the scent is not there for our pleasure!). We will discuss specific plants\, shrubs\, and trees with fragrant flowers and foliage that can be grown in New England and where to place them in the landscape to maximize our enjoyment of their fragrance throughout the garden. \nJoanne Pearson has been a professional photographer for over 25 years. Prior to her career as a photographer\, she was a registered landscape architect in the state of  Massachusetts where she practiced for 12 years.  Her photographs of gardens\, landscapes\, and people have been featured in numerous magazines\, books\, and calendars including Yankee magazine\, Farm and Ranch Living\, and BrownTrout Publishers\, Inc. She is also the solo photographer for Mahoney Publishing’s Flowers and Gardens of New England. \nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.  \n\n

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we will discuss The Year of Living Danishly: My Twelve Months Unearthing the Secrets of the World’s Happiest Country by Helen Russell. \nWhen journalist Helen Russell and her husband move to Denmark so her husband can work for Lego\, Russell begins a quest to determine why Denmark is often considered the happiest place on earth.  The result is this memoir: \nFrom childcare\, education\, food and interior design to SAD\, taxes\, sexism and an unfortunate predilection for burning witches\, The Year of Living Danishly is a funny\, poignant record of a journey that shows us where the Danes get it right\, where they get it wrong\, and how we might just benefit from living a little more Danishly ourselves. DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday July 25\nWe will be discussing: \nLa Double Vie de Véronique by Krzysztof Kieślowski\, France 1991 \nDVD Available in the Minuteman Network HERE \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Calling all Crafters
DESCRIPTION:Helpers needed for the Bacon Free Library entry to the Festival of Trees at Mass Horticultural Society. This year’s theme is Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina. The idea is to make cap-like ornaments that will hang on the tree with monkeys from the Barrel of Monkeys game. A copy of the book will be one of the prizes underneath. We are also looking for donations of the game Barrel of Monkeys. If you have one that you do not use we’d be glad to have it. Thank you! \nWe need people who can trace\, cut\, assemble\, fold\, iron\, glue or use a needle. We’ll make an assembly line and hang out around the big table and chat while we work. Fran and the Friends of the Bacon Free Library thank you. Sorry\, this event is for adults only. No registration required.
