SUMMARY:History of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that from 1659 to 1681\, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston\, and law-breakers were fined five shillings for breaking the law?   Irish historian Sean Murphy will explain this oddity and many others in the winding history of Christmas through the ages. From the ancient societies who celebrated the winter equinox to the Roman Christians who built on those traditions to the practices of more modern times\, Mr. Murphy will guide you through it all in his History of Christmas presentation. You’ll also learn about the rich yuletide traditions in Ireland and enjoy music and videos of the season. \nSean Murphy\, is a teacher of Irish history\, music\, and dance. Over the past 12 years he has taught courses at the Irish Cultural Center of New England in Canton\, Cape Cod Sons of Erin\, Cape Cod Cultural Center\, the Cotuit Center for the Arts\, and at venues on Nantucket.  He speaks on Irish cultural\, historic\, and general issues at libraries\, and at private and community events across the Cape and beyond.  \nThe BFL is cohosting this program with the Bigelow Free Public Library and four other libraries. This program will be held over Zoom. Please register at the Bigelow Library website to receive the Zoom meeting link.

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we will discuss Underground: a human history of the worlds beneath our feet By Will Hunt. \nHere’s a brief intro from the publisher: \nWhen Will Hunt was sixteen years old\, he discovered an abandoned tunnel that ran beneath his house in Providence\, Rhode Island. His first tunnel trips inspired a lifelong fascination with exploring underground worlds\, from the derelict subway stations and sewers of New York City to sacred caves\, catacombs\, tombs\, bunkers\, and ancient underground cities in more than twenty countries around the world. Underground is both a personal exploration of Hunt’s obsession and a panoramic study of how we are all connected to the underground\, how caves and other dark hollows have frightened and enchanted us through the ages.  \n(for more information: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/240262/underground-by-will-hunt/) \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nYou can also access the audio book through the Minuteman network. \nOur discussion will be held over zoom. SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we will discuss The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Era of Color Blindness by Michelle Alexander. \nIn an introduction to a conversation with Michelle Alexander\, David Remnick of The New Yorker explains: \nThe New Jim Crow was hardly an immediate best-seller\, but after a couple of years it took off and seemed to be at the center of discussion about criminal-justice reform and racism in America. The book considers not only the enormity and cruelty of the American prison system but also\, as Alexander writes\, the way the war on drugs and the justice system have been used as a “system of control” that shatters the lives of millions of Americans—particularly young black and Hispanic men. \n(Click here to read Remnick’s interview with Michelle Alexander) \n  \nCopies of this book are available at the library.  \nYou can also access the ebook or the audio book through the Minuteman network. \nOur discussion will be held over zoom. SUMMARY:Cinéphile Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Cinephilia is an academic word literally meaning “love of cinema\,” but it also contains hints of nostalgia and passion for a film art that was undoubtedly the defining media experience of the twentieth century. \nAs such\, cinema has a variegated and fascinating history which extends well beyond the Hollywood we are all familiar with.  Meant as a tribute to the film art around the world\, from the days of silent cinema to the new waves and beyond\, our cinephile Mondays is a slow and tasteful appreciation of the First Century of Cinema.  The films will be selected on the basis of their relevance for the development of the film art.  On the last Monday of the month\, cinephiles of the world unite!  \nWatch a movie at home and then join Film history & Media studies Professor MV for a virtual discussion. \nFor Monday February 28\nwe will be discussing: \nCaro Diario by Nanni Moretti\, Italy 1993 \nAvailable on KANOPY \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net

SUMMARY:Pam Weeks: Soft Protests
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that protest quilts date back to 1830?  In fact\, stories have been quilted into bed coverings as far back as the year 1400.  Join quilt historian Pam Weeks as she explores the rich history of storytelling\, social awareness\, and peaceful protest through textiles and quilts.     \nThis program is presented in conjunction with the Natick Historical Society.  See their website for more information.  \nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register below to receive the meeting link.  \n Pam Weeks’ love for quilts began at the time of the United States Bicentennial in 1976. Pam made traditional and then art quilts\, but in 1991 she fell in love with antique quilts and began an exploration of quilt history\, women’s history\, and textile history\, which continues to this day. \nHer published work on signature quilts and potholder quilts is found in the American Quilt Study Group’s peer reviewed journal Uncoverings. Click on these links to check out her books from our library network.    Civil War Quilts  published in 2011\, with co-author Don Beld and Deeds Not Words: Celebrating 100 years of Women’s Suffrage published in 2019\, with Sandra Sider.  She has also contributed to the book\, Maine Quilts: 250 years of comfort and community.  Her latest book\, Portable Patchwork came out on Amazon in January of this year.  \nAs the Binney Family Curator of the New England Quilt Museum\, Pam works with quilters\, collectors\, institutions\, and co-conspirators to plan exhibits and conduct research on the quilts in the museum’s collection. Pam hikes and gardens in New Hampshire where she lives with her partner Scott\, and her wee dog\, Simon the Amazing Papillon. \n\n

\nFor Monday March 28\nwe will be discussing: \nBattleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein\, Soviet Union 1925 \nAvailable on KANOPY \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in attending this Zoom discussion\, please contact Graziella at glesellier@minlib.net
