I am the author of eleven books for children, a lifelong doodler, a former television news producer and filmmaker. My first book, Double Pink, illustrated by Bruce Ingman, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2005. Four of my books have been illustrated by my father, Jules Feiffer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and generally celebrated person of many talents. Caldecott honor illustrator Diane Goode illustrated My Mom is Trying to Ruin My Life, President Pennybaker and But I Wanted a Baby Brother! Reviewer Gail Cooke compared our collaboration to, “Rogers and Hart, Stanley and Livingstone, Fred and Ginger, Holmes and Watson, lox and bagels.” (It doesn’t get better than that!) Laura Huliska-Beith gorgeously illustrated The Wild Wild Inside and the incomparable Tricia Tusa’s line drawings make The Problem with The Puddles the perfect hybrid book for young readers taking the leap into chapter books. In 2012, Signed By Zelda was published. The book, a mystery, has been lauded for its celebration of good old-fashioned handwriting.
My Mom is Trying to Ruin My Life is now a musical that will be coming to stages soon. MJ Bruder Munafo collaborated on the script and composer Paul Jacobs and lyricist Sarah Durkee created the music. In 2013, The Workshop Theater Company, an off-off Broadway theater in New York City workshopped the musical. The Vineyard Playhouse workshopped it as a play in 2010.
My doodles and drawings have been scattered around the house for years. Recently, however, I’ve let some of them out the door. In the summer of 2013, The Vineyard Playhouse Art Space gave me a solo show titled, “From Doodles to Drawings and Back Again” and I currently have work in the The R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, MA and The Field Gallery, in West Tisbury, MA. Since my show, my work has traveled to homes in Australia, Italy, New York , California, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Washington DC. Soon they will be featured on CNN’s Headline News Network. Stay tuned for more about that.
I currently write and do illustrations for local and regional publications about topics related to Martha’s Vineyard and illustrate a popular advice column called MV Ps and Qs , written by Nicole Galland, a close friend who is also a wonderful novelist. I am an editor at MV Arts & Ideas Magazine and have the great honor of putting together Islanders Write, which is a day dedicated to the art, craft and business of writing — the next one will be on Monday, August 8. My essays have been broadcast of NPR and I am a former Boston-based televison news producer, and the writer and director of the documentary film, “Matzo & Mistletoe.”
I live on the island of Martha’s Vineyard with my husband Chris, daughter Maddy, the real Henry the dog with no tail and our sweet singing horse, Aria.
